Plug-ins for calibration, analysis, and alignment of live PA audio systems
Waves TRACT System Calibration has evolved into a comprehensive toolkit for live sound system tuning. Three plug-ins work together to cover the entire workflow: measuring the PA, calibrating it, and monitoring its levels during the show. The original TRACT System Calibration plug-in is now joined by TRACT Measure and SPL Meter, all integrated into Waves’ live hosts. The result is a seamless workflow, from the first measurement during soundcheck to the last song on the setlist, managed entirely from the same platform you use for mixing.
With TRACT Measure, you can measure the system directly within eMotion LV1, SuperRack Performer, or SuperRack SoundGrid. No external measurement software, no second computer to bring on stage: insert the plug-in into a mono channel, connect the measurement microphone, load the corresponding calibration file, and capture the transfer function and delay in a single pass of pink noise.
You can work in Auto or Manual mode and send each acquisition directly to TRACT System Calibration. Measurements taken from multiple microphone positions are combined into a single correction curve. The Current, Last, and Delta readings provide the exact offsets needed to time-align the front fill and delay tower, reducing setup time when every minute before doors open counts.
TRACT System Calibration transforms measurements into concrete corrections for the system. It automatically generates the corrective EQ, allows you to customize the resulting curve, and time-align the different sections of the PA system. Whether you measure with TRACT Measure or Smaart, the data flows into the same calibration workflow.
Unlike room-tuning systems that optimize a single listening point, TRACT captures up to 8 response snapshots and blends them into a single correction curve. The compensation thus extends to the widest possible area, ensuring consistent sound across the entire audience—not just in the control room.
The correction is based on an FIR EQ curve. Choose minimum phase when the lowest latency with minimal phase distortion is important, or linear phase when you need perfect phase coherence.
You can combine the FIR curve with up to 8 IIR filter bands, featuring a wide selection of filter shapes: bell, high- and low-shelf, flat-top, tilt EQ with variable pivot frequency, Butterworth and Linkwitz-Riley curves, and more. The final say on the system’s character remains in your hands.
The Sub Zoom feature zooms in on the low end of the spectrum so you can precisely adjust the phase alignment of the subs. Reduce muddiness and lack of definition, and achieve maximum impact in the low frequencies.
TRACT System Calibration continues to work seamlessly with Rational Acoustics’ Smaart (Sound Measurement Acoustical Analysis Real Time) v9, in the Suite, RT, and LE versions, which are sold separately. This gives you two alternative ways to feed the TRACT correction workflow. Smaart also remains useful for its Spectrograph analysis and phase alignment functions, which are not currently covered by TRACT Measure.
Once the system is calibrated, SPL Meter lets you keep an eye on sound pressure levels throughout the concert, directly from the Waves Live host. View current and peak SPL, choose between A-weighting and C-weighting, and set a threshold that alerts you when levels get too high.
SPL measurements can be logged and exported in CSV format to document the levels reached and analyze them after the event. This is valuable data when you need to comply with noise limits or fulfill reporting requests from organizers and venues.
