MPE Expressive MIDI Controller with 49 Multidimensional Keys
The Expressive E Osmose 49 CE is an expressive MPE MIDI controller designed to provide a more direct, physical, and musical connection with software instruments, plugins, and modern studio setups. Its 49-key multidimensional keyboard detects numerous gestures on every single note, allowing you to shape the sound through velocity, pressure, aftertouch, pitch bend, vibrato, glide, strum, and other articulations.
Osmose 49 CE combines Expressive E’s acclaimed expressive keyboard technology with the new Ctrl-e software ecosystem. The package includes over 900 presets designed to fully exploit the keyboard’s dynamic capabilities and provides immediate access to expressive sounds developed in collaboration with companies such as KiloHearts, Dawesome, AAS, GForce, Vital, and Synapse Audio.
The Osmose 49 CE transcends the limitations of traditional controllers by offering independent and continuous control over every note played. Thanks to the MPE protocol, musicians can independently adjust the pitch, velocity, and timbre of each key, creating more articulate and natural phrasing.
The keyboard’s response allows every gesture to be transformed into a musical parameter. Vertical pressure, lateral movement, release, and dynamic variations become an integral part of the performance, making the instrument ideal for solo parts, evolving textures, modeled acoustic instruments, and complex synthesizers.
The Osmose 49 CE’s keyboard was developed in-house by Expressive E to offer precise and natural interaction. Each key responds to multiple levels of touch, allowing the musician to control the sound without interrupting the performance.
The system detects initial touch, progressive pressure, and aftertouch, allowing you to control dynamics, intensity, filter width, volume, timbre, and other assignable parameters.
Each note can be modulated independently through lateral movements of the key. This allows you to perform vibrato, pitch bends, and micro-variations in pitch without affecting the other notes in the chord.
The Osmose 49 CE also interprets more nuanced gestures such as Shake, Strum, and expressive note release. These features expand the range of available articulations and make the performance of acoustic instruments, strings, woodwinds, and advanced sound design more authentic.
The MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) protocol allows for the transmission of independent expressive information for each note. The Osmose 49 CE leverages this technology to control compatible software instruments with a higher level of detail than a standard MIDI keyboard.
Within a chord, each note can have its own pitch bend, different velocity, and distinct timbre control. This allows you to create complex internal movements and more dynamic polyphonic phrasing.
In addition to MPE control, the Osmose 49 CE can be used within standard MIDI setups. This allows it to integrate with virtual instruments, hardware synthesizers, and systems that do not yet support the MPE protocol.
The Osmose 49 CE includes Ctrl-e, a software ecosystem dedicated to managing expressive sounds. The platform offers a library of over 900 presets designed to respond to different keyboard gestures.
The presets cover a wide range of sounds and are programmed to highlight touch, vibrato, bending, and multidimensional articulations. Musicians can therefore immediately explore the keyboard’s full potential without having to manually configure every parameter.
The Ctrl-e ecosystem includes content developed through collaborations with brands such as KiloHearts, Dawesome, Applied Acoustics Systems, GForce, Vital, and Synapse Audio.
Each preset accessible via Ctrl-e features eight pre-configured macros. These controls allow you to quickly adjust the main sound parameters and adapt the preset to your performance or production context.
The ecosystem also includes proprietary tools designed specifically to take full advantage of Osmose CE’s features.
Soliste is a tool dedicated to physically modeled solo strings. The keyboard’s expressive behavior allows you to control articulation, dynamics, vibrato, and intensity in great detail.
Noisy 2 is a dual-layer noise-based synthesizer designed to generate complex and responsive timbres. Osmose’s multidimensional response allows you to transform every gesture into a sonic element.
Osmose 49 CE features a built-in MPE arpeggiator in which each note retains its own expressive independence. Pressure, pitch, and other parameters can continue to vary in real time even while the arpeggio is playing.
Unlike a traditional arpeggiator, the system preserves the dynamic response of individual keys. The musician can therefore modify the intensity and character of the arpeggio directly through their playing.
The arpeggiator can be used with both MPE-compatible instruments and within conventional MIDI setups, offering greater flexibility in the studio and on stage.
The Press Glide function allows you to create controlled transitions based on the pressure applied to the keys. This system can be used to link notes, modulate parameters, or generate continuous timbral variations.
Modulation occurs directly during performance, without the need for wheels, joysticks, or external controllers. The musician can therefore keep both hands on the keyboard and focus on phrasing.
Osmose 49 CE includes dedicated DAW control features designed to reduce mouse usage and keep the musician immersed in the creative flow.
The controller supports integration with Live 12+, Cubase 15+, Bitwig 5+, and Logic Pro 12rl+, allowing you to manage key functions directly from the hardware.
The built-in controls let you adjust navigation, parameters, and session functions without constantly switching between the keyboard, computer, and additional controllers.
Osmose 49 CE features seven knobs or encoders, nine buttons, and a 4.3-inch color LCD screen. The interface clearly displays presets, parameters, and operational settings.
The pitch/modulation slider adds an extra layer of control to traditional workflows and allows you to manage continuous modulations instantly.
The built-in screen makes it easy to navigate functions, select presets, and control parameters, reducing the need to constantly check your computer.
The unit includes MIDI DIN In, MIDI DIN Out/Thru, and a USB-C connection. Osmose 49 CE can therefore be integrated into both software setups and hardware configurations with synthesizers, sound modules, and other MIDI equipment.
The two pedal inputs can be configured to suit the musician’s needs, further expanding control during performance.
The Osmose 49 CE uses 5 V / 3.0 A USB-C power, simplifying setup in modern studio environments.
Expressive E has designed the Osmose CE ecosystem to evolve over time. Regular firmware updates are designed to improve workflows, enhance integration with DAWs, and progressively expand the user experience.
The combination of hardware, firmware, and software allows the Osmose 49 CE to adapt to the development of new MPE instruments and future music production setups.
The Osmose 49 CE features a white aluminum top and a black base. The design combines sturdiness, elegance, and a contemporary aesthetic suitable for professional studios, home studios, and live setups.
The keyboard is developed entirely by Expressive E and manufactured in Poland. Its construction is designed to provide stability during performance and precise response from the multidimensional controls.
The Expressive E Osmose 49 CE is ideal for musicians who use virtual instruments, MPE plugins, hardware synthesizers, and modern DAWs. Its expressive capabilities make it particularly well-suited for composition, sound design, film scoring, electronic performance, and studio production.
The keyboard allows you to integrate dynamics, pitch, and articulation directly into your playing. The result is more immediate and musical control compared to a conventional controller.
