The Schoeps OCT Surround Set is a professional microphone system designed for 5.1 surround recordings and immersive audio setups. The set is based on the OCT (Optimized Cardioid Triangle) technique, developed by Günther Theile, which uses a configuration of cardioid and supercardioid microphones to achieve extremely accurate spatial reproduction.

The OCT Surround technique extends the traditional OCT configuration by adding two dedicated cardioid microphones to the LS and RS surround channels, creating a complete take for multichannel productions.

OCT technique for accurate surround recordings

The OCT configuration is designed to provide extremely linear localization of sound sources and very effective separation between the left, center and right sectors. This allows for a stable and natural sound scene during playback.

The technique uses a front-facing cardioid microphone for the center channel and two side-facing supercardioid microphones for the left and right channels, positioned behind the center microphone according to calibrated distances.

Natural spatial imaging and wide listening area

With reduced crosstalk between channels and natural distribution of room reflections, the system provides a very realistic soundstage with a wide listening area. This makes it particularly suitable for orchestral recordings and professional multichannel productions.

OCT Surround system configuration

In the OCT Surround system, the center channel is recorded through a front-facing cardioid microphone. The left and right front channels use two supercardioids placed on either side of the configuration, while two additional cardioid microphones capture the rear surround channels.

The distance between the front-facing supercardioid microphones can vary between 40 and 90 cm, determining the overall pickup angle and allowing the system to be adapted to different recording situations.

The set includes compact Schoeps CCM series microphones, known for their high sound quality and extremely stable frequency response even when sound arrives from different angles. This feature is critical in OCT setups, where the microphones receive a large portion of the signal off-axis.

Schoeps modular system alternative

CCM microphones can be replaced with equivalent combinations of CMC 1 L amplifier and MK series capsules, maintaining the same acoustic characteristics as the original configuration.
