Il V 402 è stato ideato principalmente per dare il massimo dal punto di vista sonoro: riesce ad amplificare il segnale del microfono senza sbavature aggiuntive o artefatti sonori (es. distorsione o rumori esterni). Nonostante la maggior parte dei preamplificatori che troviamo oggi sul mercato si autodefiniscano “lineari” e “neutri”, nessuno riesce davvero ad eguagliare le performance di Neumann. L’ingegneria del V 402 è molto specifica e dettagliata, ragion per cui prima di rilasciarlo, l’articolo in questione è stato sottoposto a diversi test di ascolto per accertarne, appunto, la sua impeccabilità nella performance; gli ingressi DI suono sono progettati per la purezza del suono di chitarre elettriche e bassi conservando il suono originale di essi, senza alterarne i colori. Un pad commutabile da 20dB consente di utilizzare il V 402 con sorgenti di alto livello fino a 28 dBu senza distorsione. La funzione “passa-alto” è stata minuziosamente ideata per la rimozione di “pops e rumble” lasciando il segnale intatto.
