The AEA A440 represents the modern evolution of the legendary RCA 44BX, one of the most iconic ribbon microphones in recording history. It retains all the sonic character that made the R44 series legendary—deep bass, rich mids, and smooth highs—while introducing active electronics powered by phantom power that improve sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and compatibility with any professional preamp.
The result is a microphone that preserves the musicality of the great vintage ribbon mics while offering modern performance, higher output levels, and extremely low self-noise.
The AEA A440 uses the same 1.8-micron NOS RCA aluminum ribbon found in the classic R44 series microphones. However, the active electronics and Lundahl transformer deliver significantly higher sensitivity than traditional passive ribbon microphones.
Thanks to P48 phantom power, the microphone delivers a high and consistent output level, eliminating the need for ultra-high-gain preamps without altering the tonal character typical of AEA ribbon microphones.
Like all AEA Big Ribbon Mics™, the A440 is designed to deliver an extremely linear and resonance-free response across the audible range. This allows for full and natural recordings with very little EQ needed during mixing.
The combination of the large ribbon element and the bidirectional polar pattern produces a wide, three-dimensional, and highly realistic sound image, ideal for both close-up shots and ambient recording.
With a sensitivity of 21 mV/Pa and a self-noise level of just 9 dB(A), the AEA A440 is one of the quietest ribbon microphones in its class. The 92 Ω output impedance also ensures optimal compatibility with most professional preamps.
The microphone can handle sound levels exceeding 136 dB SPL, making it perfect for both delicate acoustic instruments and very powerful sound sources such as amplifiers, brass instruments, drums, and percussion.
The A440 is crafted using high-quality cast bronze components, offering an extremely robust construction and a refined finish. Every detail echoes the historic design of the R44 series, reinterpreted according to AEA’s modern manufacturing standards.
The microphone comes complete with a 3-meter fabric-sleeved Accusound Silver Studio Pro cable, a zippered canvas bag, and the AEA 44VC vertical storage case, designed to ensure proper storage of the microphone when not in use.
