Elysia XMAX Masterbus Processor: Power, Accuracy and Transparency

Introduction

Welcome to this in-depth look at the Elysia XMAX Masterbus Processor, an instrument designed to redefine stereo processing in mixing, mastering, and live performance. We discuss a Class A analog processor that combines sonic transparency with modern features such as multiband M/S compression and controlled soft clipping.

Architecture and Functionality

The XMAX works by encoding the stereo channel into Mid and Side, allowing independent treatment of the center and side components of the mix. The Mid band is further divided into Low and Mid, allowing three independent compressors to be handled in a single chassis.

Each band has independent parameters for threshold (threshold) and gain (gain), offering extreme flexibility in shaping dynamics. The crossover point between Low and Mid is variable, allowing precise control over low frequencies.

One of the distinctive functions is VariLink, which allows the degree of linkage between the three bands to be adjusted from 0% to 100%, optimizing processing consistency as needed.

Sound Quality and Controlled Clipping

The signal path is entirely Class A, guaranteeing maximum transparency and sound quality. The built-in Soft Clipper is inspired by Elysia's famous Alpha Compressor, designed to increase perceived volume without introducing unpleasant distortion, protecting external A/D converters.

Release management (release) is centralized: a single control determines the release rate for all bands, from fast, aggressive settings to softer, more musical behavior.

Operating Modes and Extra Controls

The Elysia XMAX can operate in two modes:

  • Punch Mode: a more punchy compression designed to thicken the mix while keeping transients intact. 1:2.55 compression ratio.
  • Normal Mode: softer, with a ratio of 1:1.45, suitable for more transparent interventions.

The Lowmo control acts as a mono maker, centering frequencies below 140 Hz and removing them from the Side channel, improving bass coherence. Rounding out the equipment is a simple but musical tone control, which allows you to "darken" or "lighten" the mixbus with a single potentiometer.

Conclusions

The Elysia XMAX Masterbus Processor represents an excellent combination of precision, musicality and innovation. It offers a transparent and defined sound, but with the ability to add punch and analog presence as needed.

The Soft Clipper allows for loudness without sacrificing sound quality, while tools such as VariLink and Mono-maker help maintain stereo balance and bass control.

Although it has some limitations, such as the uniqueness of the release control and the lack of separate management of clipping by band, the XMAX proves to be a powerful and refined solution for professional mixing and mastering.
