Stereo audio processor for dynamic equalization and tonal enhancement
The SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T is a stereo audio processor for dynamic equalization and tonal vitalization, the direct successor to one of the most popular processors in SPL’s history. The patented Vitalizer circuit is based on research in psychoacoustics and audiometry and focuses on the perception of sound rather than mere correction: productions gain detail, transparency, and perceived volume, with a solid bass foundation when needed. Whether in the studio, during mastering, or live, it’s a tool for breathing life into flat mixes without disrupting their balance.
When multiple sources share the same frequency ranges, certain components mask one another, and the mix loses definition. The Vitalizer addresses this masking phenomenon by correlating the perceived duration of a frequency with its amplitude. The spectrum is also adapted to the equal-loudness curves (Fletcher-Munson), improving perceived volume: the result is a mix that’s clearer and more present even at lower listening levels, without having to push the limiter.
The Mk3-T replaces the classic gold front panel of the previous model with the black finish of the SPL Studio series and sets the internal audio voltage to ±18 V. The increased headroom results in a more detailed sound and a wider margin before saturation, which is useful when the input signal is already coming from a heavily loaded mix bus.
The Drive control adjusts the input level to the filter network, from -20 dB to +6 dB, with the center position set to unity gain. The OVL LED lights up 3 dB before the input and internal stages saturate, allowing you to set the correct level in an instant.
With Bass Sound, you can choose the character of the low end: Soft for warm, mellow bass, and Tight for dry, percussive bass. The “one-knob” compressor acts only on the bass processing path, leaving the original content intact, to keep the kick and bass in check without losing dynamics in the rest of the mix.
Mid-Hi Tune sets the cutoff frequency of a wideband shelving filter, ranging from 1.1 kHz to 22 kHz, to shape everything from vocal presence to high-end air. Process adjusts the intensity of bass and midrange processing relative to the original signal, for controlled and repeatable results.
In addition to the core of the Vitalizer circuit, the Mk3-T incorporates a high-frequency and harmonic stage with inductor-capacitor (LC) filters—known for their musical smoothness in the high frequencies—and a Stereo Expander to widen the stereo image without artifacts. The On switch activates processing and allows you to quickly compare the processed signal with the original.
Inputs and outputs feature Neutrik XLR connectors with gold-plated contacts and TRS jacks wired in parallel, allowing you to integrate the Vitalizer into both studio setups and live rack systems. The 4 mm black anodized aluminum front panel and machined aluminum knobs ensure durability and a precise feel.
