The Soma Laboratory Pulsar-23 Utilities Screw is a set of simple auxiliary modules designed to significantly expand the functionality of your PULSAR-23 drum machine. But that's not all: these UTILITIES modules are extremely versatile and can also be used with any device that operates with CV signals, such as Eurorack systems or semi-modular synthesizers. This "Screw" version offers a practical and economical solution, with screw connections for alligator cables, while maintaining the same functional flexibility as the turret version.
The modules included in UTILITIES fall into two main categories: passive elements such as switches, resistors, and capacitors, which expand the switching and control possibilities of PULSAR; and various types of amplifiers and waveshapers, both linear and nonlinear, controlled and uncontrolled. These tools are essential for shaping your sound, from simple level matching to creating complex harmonic distortions.
The linear amplifiers included in UTILITIES are essential for adapting signals from devices with lower voltages (e.g., 5V step sequencers or 1V recorder outputs) to the inputs of the PULSAR-23, which may require higher voltages (e.g., 10V for battery modules or 5V for audio signals). This ensures that your signals are always at the optimum level. The nonlinear, controlled amplifiers and waveshapers, on the other hand, are designed for more extreme sound design, allowing you to control the signal level, simultaneously change the spectrum, distort the waveform, and add rich harmonics. Their simple circuits, based on early developments from the transistor era, give them a unique and inherent character.
The module also integrates a controlled limiting amplifier (CLIPPING AMP-VCA) to adjust gain and clipping based on input voltage, linear amplifiers with adjustable gain for DC and AC signals and phase inversion option, and diode VCAs based on vintage circuits for a warm sound and controllable distortion. You will also find pulse converters for precise triggering of PULSAR drum modules from square-wave signals, and the nonlinear waveform converter (WARP) that introduces distortion and modulation.
For visual monitoring, there are LEDs, while four independent attenuators allow fine adjustment of signal levels. Creativity is further stimulated by the presence of photoresistors, which allow light-controlled signal modulation, and a series of body patching sensors for innovative tactile control of the PULSAR. Four durable switch buttons facilitate signal switching.
UTILITIES is available in several versions, including one with screws instead of pins, designed for connecting alligator clips, offering a more affordable option and a different look. Eurorack 3.5 mm mini-jack adapters are also available for even wider compatibility. UTILITIES' top panel and casing are made of PCB, which greatly reduced the final cost of the device.
