Music Thing Modular Turing Machine: generative sequencer for Eurorack

The Music Thing Modular Turing Machine is a Eurorack module designed to generate musical sequences in a semi-random manner. This used unit uses a 16-bit shift register to produce control voltages that change over time, creating ever-changing melodies, basslines, and modulations.

Unlike traditional sequencers, the Turing Machine is not designed to program precise sequences or store patterns. Its goal is to generate music spontaneously, offering a creative system that allows the sequencer's behavior to be guided rather than rigidly controlled.

Controllable random sequences and repeatable loops

The module generates control voltages in steps synchronized with the clock. These voltages change randomly, but can be locked into repeatable sequences by looping control.

The large central potentiometer adjusts the behavior of the sequence:

  • 12 o'clock: completely random sequences
  • At 5 o'clock: sequence locks into a repeatable loop
  • At 7 o'clock: sequence twice the set length
  • At 3 or 9 o'clock: sequence that "slips," with occasional variations

This system makes it easy to switch from random generation to repeatable patterns, creating dynamic but controllable musical sequences.

Expandability with Turing Machine modules

Dedicated expansions

The Turing Machine can be expanded through a series of expanders connected to the back of the module, which use the sequence generated by the main module in different ways:

  • Volts: adds an additional CV output with five level controls
  • Pulses: turns the sequence into rhythmic patterns with eleven trigger outputs
  • Voltages: two CV outputs controlled by eight faders
  • Vactrol Mix: sequenced matrix mixer for audio manipulation and feedback

With these expansions, the Turing Machine can become the heart of complex generative patches, ideal for experimental modular music.

Eurorack module for generative patching

The Turing Machine has become one of the most popular modules in the Eurorack world for creating generative patches. It is perfect for musicians who wish to explore semi-random composition systems, creating sequences that evolve over time without traditional programming.
