The Retro Instruments 176 is a mono tube compressor based on the legendary Universal Audio 176, with major improvements that expand its functionality while retaining its distinctive sonic character. It uses an authentic Vari-Mu circuit that gives punch, warmth and three-dimensionality to vocals, acoustic instruments and stereo mixes.
The front panel offers a complete set of professional controls: the Active/Bypass switch allows immediate comparison between treated and original signal; the Asymmetry switch adjusts the behavior of the detector on signal phases, optimizing the response on content with phase peaks; and the Interstage switch allows you to engage or disengage the transformer between stages, modifying the response on high frequencies.
Ratio switch varies from 2:1 to 12:1, ideal for dealing with all kinds of signals. The deactivatable high-pass filter prevents low-frequency compression, while attack and release controls allow precise sculpting of dynamic behavior. Built-in analog meter lets you monitor input, output and gain reduction in real time.
With its tube circuitry and impeccable build quality, the Retro Instruments 176 delivers the dense, harmonic sound of compressors from the 1950s and 1960s. Perfect for coloring lead vocals, strings, drums or entire mixes, it is a must-have tool for those seeking musicality and precision in one device.
