A classic of electronic percussive synthesis, reborn as something completely different. Starting with the famous 808 "super electro" circuit, Hexinverter has transformed it into a creative tool for modular synthesis: an analog hi-hat generator capable of classic open and closed sounds, but with controls and flexibility designed for sound design.
The Mutant Hihats can simultaneously generate open and closed hi-hats in TR-808 style, but it goes far beyond "vintage cloned": the original low-fidelity VCAs have been replaced by modern OTA-based VCAs, while the audio chain has been redesigned in a hi-fi key with op-amps and low-noise OTAs. Voltage controls take advantage of non-invasive analog optocouplers, so you can also get fully vintage sounds when you want them.
Each hi-hat has a DRIVE control on the VCA: you can switch between soft metallic hi-hats and extremely saturated, "crunchy" timbres. The internal resonant bandpass filter (on/off) adds additional sculpting, with cutoff frequency control. A unique switch lets you choose how open and closed interact when triggered at the same time, expanding rhythmic and timbral possibilities.
The external audio input allows you to synthesize hi-hats from almost any source in your system (noise, oscillator, digital textures, etc.). In addition, the "mutual" accent (0-5V CV) allows dynamic variations at a modular level, while the trigger input accepts virtually any trigger signal, making the module easy to integrate into very different setups.
After the closure of Hexinverter Électronique's operations (announced in September 2022), Erica Synths chose to continue production and support of some iconic modules. While maintaining functionality, the hardware has been redesigned in close collaboration with Hexinverter and support is guaranteed for reissue versions.
