When it comes to high-end condenser microphones, the market is dominated by historic brands and products that, over time, have become true benchmarks in recording studios around the world. In recent years, however, smaller, more specialized companies have also emerged, choosing to take different design paths and developing proprietary solutions rather than simply reinterpreting existing designs.
Nordic Audio Labs fits perfectly into this category.
The Finnish company handcrafts its microphones with a very specific philosophy: to combine the natural sound and musicality that many engineers associate with the best tube microphones with the level of detail and precision expected from a modern solid-state condenser microphone.

For this review, we had the opportunity to test two particularly interesting models from the lineup: the NU-24K and the NU-100K. These two microphones share much of the technological platform developed by the company but are designed to address slightly different operational needs.
At the heart of both microphones are two key elements: the proprietary D100K capsule and FloFET™ technology.
The D100K is a 30-mm edge-terminated condenser capsule designed in-house by Nordic Audio Labs. According to the manufacturer, this design ensures a particularly realistic transient response, a very linear off-axis response, and an extremely smooth high-frequency response.

Another interesting aspect concerns the capsule’s construction itself, which was developed to be less susceptible to humidity-related issues than many traditional capsules—a feature that can be particularly useful for vocal recordings or shoots in environments that aren’t perfectly controlled.
The second distinctive feature is FloFET™ technology.
Although these are solid-state, transformerless microphones powered by standard 48V phantom power, Nordic Audio Labs’ goal is to achieve a sound response that retains some of the warmth, depth, and three-dimensionality often associated with the best tube designs.
In other words, the idea is to avoid both the excessive coloration of some vintage-inspired microphones and the sometimes aggressive brightness that characterizes many modern condenser microphones.
The NU-24K is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with a cardioid polar pattern.
Nordic Audio Labs markets it primarily as a vocal microphone, but its design philosophy is that of the classic “one microphone for everything”—a microphone capable of delivering impressive results with virtually any sound source.
Key features include a frequency response rangingfrom 17 Hz to 27 kHz, very low output impedance, and a high output level that allows for excellent results even when using the built-in preamps of standard audio interfaces.
The build quality is exceptional, with each unit hand-assembled in Finland and supplied complete with a shock mount and a hard flight case.
The NU-100K features the same D100K capsule and FloFET™ technology, but adds the ability to select from three different polar patterns: cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8.
This feature significantly expands the microphone’s range of applications, making it suitable not only for classic vocal and instrumental recordings but also for advanced stereo techniques, ambient recording, orchestral recordings, and Mid/Side or Blumlein configurations.
From a technical standpoint, its specifications are very similar to those of the NU-24K, with extremely low noise and sound pressure handling that allows it to handle particularly high-energy sound sources with ease.
For those looking for a single microphone capable of covering as many applications as possible, the NU-100K is likely the most versatile model in the lineup.
Technical specifications tell only part of the story. To truly understand how these microphones perform, we decided to use them in a wide variety of situations.

The goal was to evaluate not only the level of detail provided by the microphones, but above all their ability to adapt to sound sources with very different sonic characteristics and dynamics.
Voices are probably the context in which Nordic Audio Labs’ sound philosophy stands out most clearly.
The first impression is that of an extremely detailed yet never aggressive microphone. The high frequencies are open, rich in detail, and very present, but without that harshness often associated with particularly bright condenser microphones.
Even sibilants always sound controlled and natural.
For spoken voice, this translates to excellent intelligibility and an overall sense of naturalness that makes the microphone particularly appealing for broadcast, podcast, and voice-over applications.
With singing, we especially appreciated its ability to maintain presence and definition without making the sound artificially bright. The midrange retains body and authenticity, while the high end helps open up the sound without ever becoming fatiguing.
The acoustic guitar is always an excellent test bed for evaluating a microphone’s overall balance.
During testing, both the NU-24K and the NU-100K demonstrated a remarkable ability to simultaneously reproduce the attack of the strings and the resonance of the instrument’s body.
The high frequencies capture the detail of the pick and the strings without sounding harsh, while the lows maintain depth and control.
The result is a very balanced sound, rich in nuance yet always natural.
The piano is probably one of the sound sources that best highlights the qualities of the D100K cartridge.
The transient response allows the performer’s touch to be clearly perceived, while the instrument’s harmonic richness is reproduced with great precision.
Particularly noteworthy is the microphones’ ability to maintain clarity across the entire keyboard range, without the higher registers becoming excessively bright or the lower registers sounding overloaded.
The two microphones also performed very convincingly with the cello.
The low frequencies are full and powerful yet always controlled, while the mid-to-high range preserves all the harmonic complexity of the instrument.
The overall impression is that of a very natural and three-dimensional recording, capable of capturing both the body of the instrument and the nuances of the bow.
Testing with an electric guitar amplifier highlighted another interesting aspect of these microphones’ character.
While maintaining a high level of detail, the sound never comes across as overly aggressive. The attack is reproduced with precision, but without unnecessarily emphasizing the sharper frequencies.
The result is a recording that preserves the amplifier’s character and makes it easy to work with during the mixing phase without having to apply heavy corrective EQ.
After several days of testing, what stands out most about the Nordic Audio Labs NU-24K and NU-100K is not so much the amount of detail they capture, but rather the way that detail is presented.
Both microphones offer a very high level of resolution, yet they consistently maintain a smooth, controlled, and natural character. The high frequencies are open and airy, the lows are solid but never intrusive, while the overall response conveys a sense of balance rarely found in products designed to impress at first listen.
In a market where many condenser microphones try to stand out through particularly pronounced brightness,Nordic Audio Labs takes a different approach: prioritizing realism, musicality, and tonal consistency.
The NU-24K is an extremely successful cardioid solution for those seeking a dedicated microphone capable of adapting to a wide range of recording contexts. The NU-100K adds the flexibility of three polar patterns, making it a particularly attractive choice for professional studios and engineers seeking maximum versatility.
