Erica Synths EDU DIY VCF is an analog low pass filter module designed for Eurorack systems and an integral part of the mki x es.EDU educational series. The VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter) is the beating heart of subtractive synthesis, shaping harmonics, dynamics and timbral character of each patch.
This module uses a ladder diode circuit, capable of delivering musical resonance and a warm, slightly retro-futuristic sonic character. Unlike classic ladder filters based on complex differential pairs, this architecture is designed to be more accessible and understandable, without sacrificing quality and musicality.
The circuit employs common and readily available components, making it ideal not only as a functional module in the modular system, but also as a teaching tool for understanding the principles behind analog filters. The resonance behavior and filter response allow for expressive sweeps, deep basses, and dynamic textures typical of classical synthesizers.
Developed by Erica Synths in collaboration with Moritz Klein, the mki x es.EDU series was created with the goal of teaching analog synthesizer circuit design from scratch. Each kit includes a detailed manual of more than 40 pages (downloadable separately), which delves into both circuit electronics and the fundamentals of sound synthesis.
The kits are designed to be affordable but require manual assembly and soldering. No technical support is provided for any problems arising from DIY assembly.
