What happens when you combine voltage-controlled distortion with one of the most iconic loudspeakers ever? The Mutant Bassdrum is born from the legendary TR-808 synthesis approach, completely redesigned for use in an analog modular synthesizer. The result is a kick capable of 808-style "vanilla" sounds as well as more aggressive and modern timbres thanks to the built-in distortion.
In addition to the classic analog character, the module offers CV control over key parameters: you can switch from short, dry hits to long, deep kicks by acting on the decay, shape the distortion in real time, and move the pitch (with rough v/oct-style response, not musically in tune). Voltage controls use non-invasive analog optocouplers, so you can maintain a fully vintage sound when you want it.
"BatteryACID" distortion is an integral part of Mutant Bassdrum's personality: you can control the amount of it via CV and push the kick into harder, more present territories in the mix. Also, when not busy on the kick, the distortion accepts external inputs-a great way to dirty up acid leads, basslines, or add character to other sources in your system.
After the closure of Hexinverter Électronique's operations (announced in September 2022), Erica Synths decided to continue production and support of some iconic modules. While maintaining the original functionality, the hardware has been redesigned by Erica Synths in close collaboration with Hexinverter, and support is guaranteed for the reissue versions.
