Phoenix Audio Scion B-Stock: Analog Summing for Hybrid Mixing

The Phoenix Audio Scion B-Stock is a 16-channel analog summing mixer designed to integrate the depth, punch, and articulation typical of analog summing into your digital workflow. This unit is offered as B-Stock. Part of the Nicerizer series, the Scion brings not only signal summing to the analog domain but also essential functions such as panning, circuit overdrive, and stereo image control. More than just a summing amplifier, the Scion is a true 16-channel analog mixer. Each input features a detented analog pan control that allows for precise positioning within the stereo field and makes it easy to recall settings.

16 Transformerless Class A Inputs with Drive Technology

The input stage of the Phoenix Audio Scion uses a truly balanced, transformerless, discrete Class A circuit. This architecture is designed to preserve the full frequency spectrum, delivering clarity, punch, and a fast transient response. The Drive Technology control is available on each of the 16 channels. With Drive disabled, the Scion can be used to achieve a particularly clean high-fidelity signal path; activating it on a single channel, however, allows you to push the circuitry toward a fuller, more saturated sound. This independent control lets you choose which elements of the mix to keep transparent and which to treat with more analog character.

Analog Pan for Depth and Stereo Separation

Each channel of the Phoenix Audio Scion features an analog pan control with a 21-position detented potentiometer. In addition to making it easier to recall settings, this system allows you to manage the positioning of the 16 signals directly in the analog domain. Panning thus becomes an integral part of the summing process and allows you to shape the stereo image before the output stage.

Phoenix Audio Scion’s Clean, Color, Mix, and Super Iron Outputs

One of the Scion’s distinctive features is the ability to access different sonic interpretations of the same mix through four stereo buses. The outputs can be used simultaneously, allowing you to record different versions of the mix and compare them during production.

Color: Phoenix Audio transformers and DSOP-2 discrete output

The Color output utilizes custom Phoenix Audio transformers alongside the manufacturer’s latest evolution of discrete Class A output amplifiers. It is designed to offer the summing path with the most pronounced analog character. The output stage combines custom-wound DB694 transformers with the proprietary, fully discrete DSOP-2 amplifier—a circuit developed by David Rees based on his experience upgrading vintage Neve consoles.

Clean: Transparent, High-Fidelity Class A Summing

The Clean output uses Scion’s purest signal path and is intended for applications where clarity and definition must be preserved. The result aims to maintain open high frequencies and solid low frequencies without intentionally introducing additional coloration into the signal path.

Mix: Continuous control between Clean and Color

The Mix output allows you to combine the Clean and Color signals, choosing any intermediate position between the two character profiles. The control can therefore be used similarly to a wet/dry control, precisely adjusting the amount of analog coloration desired.

Super Iron: Dual Transformers for Greater Saturation

For applications requiring an even more pronounced character, the Super Iron output uses two sets of transformers in cascade. The first stage feeds the second, intentionally increasing coloration and saturation.

Stereo Width Control for the Phoenix Audio Scion

The Scion features a Stereo Width control based on Mid/Side processing. Using a single control, you can narrow the soundstage down to mono or widen it up to 25% beyond the normal stereo image. A dedicated bypass is also included, allowing you to quickly compare the original mix with the one processed using the Width control.

Stereo Inserts and External Analog Processors

Phoenix Audio Scion allows you to insert balanced or unbalanced equipment into the mix bus. This makes it possible to integrate external processors—such as bus compressors and equalizers—into the signal path, a feature that’s useful both during mixing and in stem-based mastering workflows. The 16 individual inputs can also accept balanced or unbalanced signals without the 6 dB loss typical of many mixer inputs. This feature facilitates the integration of analog synths, stompboxes, and other gear with different output configurations.

Bus Linking to Expand Analog Summing to 32 Channels

When 16 inputs aren’t enough, the Bus Linking feature allows you to connect two Scion units to create a 32-channel system. The master/slave configuration thus lets you expand the number of signals you can handle while maintaining an integrated analog summing workflow.
