Large, versatile ribbon microphone
The AEA R84 is a passive ribbon microphone based on LRG (Large Ribbon Geometry) technology, designed to deliver the warm, natural character of AEA’s large ribbon microphones in a versatile, easy-to-use format.
The extremely thin, low-tension-mounted capsule ensures a very fast transient response, allowing the microphone to accurately reproduce both the most delicate nuances and high-sound-pressure-level sources.
The AEA R84 uses the same Big Ribbon™, the same tuning, and the same transformer as the renowned R44 series. The result is a response that is rich in the low frequencies, natural in the midrange, and smooth in the high frequencies, free from the harshness that can characterize other types of transducers.
The wide-band response, extending from 20 Hz to over 20 kHz, makes the microphone suitable for a wide range of sources, including vocals, brass, woodwinds, strings, piano, percussion, and guitar and bass amplifiers.
The 1.8-micron pure aluminum ribbon reacts quickly to signal changes, reproducing attack and detail with precision without sacrificing the typical musicality of ribbon microphones.
With a dynamic range exceeding 165 dB SPL above 1 kHz, the AEA R84 can be placed even in front of particularly powerful sources, such as amplifiers, brass, and percussion, while maintaining a clean and natural response.
The native figure-8 polar pattern offers equal sensitivity at the front and rear of the microphone, with strong side-lobe attenuation. This characteristic allows for effective control of room acoustics and achieves a high gain before feedback.
Horizontally, the frequency response remains consistent as the angle changes, while the level gradually decreases until reaching a null of approximately -35 dB at 90° and 270°. In the vertical plane, high frequencies are attenuated above and below the main axes, offering additional possibilities for tonal shaping through positioning.
Compared to the R44 series, the AEA R84 features a more moderate proximity effect. This facilitates close placement and allows for full, rich bass without making the sound overly emphatic.
By adjusting the distance and angle relative to the sound source, you can transition from an intimate, present sound to a more open, ambient sound.
The AEA R84 is designed to perform effectively both as a close-up microphone and as an ambient microphone. Its natural response makes it particularly well-suited for acoustic instruments, ensembles, drums, amplifiers, and orchestral recordings.
The figure-8 polar pattern also allows the microphone to be used in Mid-Side and Blumlein stereo configurations, producing wide, realistic sound images with excellent spatial perception.
The AEA R84 is a passive microphone and does not require phantom power. To achieve the best signal-to-noise ratio, we recommend using a low-noise microphone preamp with adequate gain and an input impedance of 1.2 kΩ or higher.
The microphone comes with a shock mount, a 3-meter integrated XLR cable, a custom soft case for storage and transport, and a user manual.
The AEA R84 is a professional solution for sound engineers, musicians, and recording studios seeking the authoritative sound of AEA’s large ribbon microphones in a versatile, reliable, and easy-to-position microphone.
