The AEA R92 is a passive ribbon microphone designed to deliver all the naturalness and musicality of AEA’s Big Ribbon™ technology in close-miking applications. Designed for high-sound-pressure-level instruments and dynamic sources, it combines deep low frequencies, accurate transients, and an extended high-frequency response.
Compared to the original model, AEA has improved wind protection, reduced low-frequency emphasis, and further extended the high-frequency response. The result is an extremely versatile microphone capable of adapting to a wide range of professional recording scenarios.
The AEA R92 uses the same Big Ribbon™ element, the same tuning, and the same transformer as those found in the renowned R44 series. Large Ribbon Geometry™ technology ensures an extremely natural response, excellent low-frequency extension, and faithful reproduction of harmonics.
The 1.8 μm pure aluminum ribbon responds quickly to transients, delivering detailed yet smooth reproduction, free from the harshness often associated with other types of transducers.
The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 18 kHz while maintaining a very natural tonal balance. Low frequencies are solid and deep, while high frequencies retain detail and definition without becoming harsh.
This combination makes the AEA R92 particularly effective for instruments rich in harmonics and complex transients.
Like all figure-8 microphones, the AEA R92 can be used with either the front or rear side facing the sound source. The two sides have different tonal responses, offering two distinct sonic personalities within a single microphone.
The front side delivers greater openness in the high frequencies and extremely realistic definition, while the rear side naturally softens the most aggressive transients, making it ideal when a warmer, more controlled sound is desired.
This dual sonic character allows you to change the character of the recording simply by flipping the microphone, without resorting to invasive EQ or different microphone models.
The AEA R92 thus offers high versatility in both studio and live recording settings.
The AEA R92 was developed specifically for close-miking applications and for sound sources characterized by high sound pressure levels. Its excellent wind protection allows the microphone to be used very close to the sound source without compromising recording quality.
Off-axis response remains extremely linear, preserving naturalness and tonal consistency even when the sound source is not perfectly aligned with the microphone.
Thanks to its ability to handle levels exceeding 135 dB SPL, the AEA R92 is an excellent choice for electric guitar amplifiers, bass cabinets, drums, percussion, and numerous other high-volume sources.
It is also highly regarded for vocal recording, where the ribbon’s natural character helps produce a warm, detailed recording that blends easily into the mix.
The AEA R92 features a flexible suspension system that makes it easy to position the microphone in any recording situation. The unique mounting system allows for precise microphone placement, even in front of amplifiers or drum kits.
The microphone comes with a 2-meter integrated cable, a hard plastic case with a foam interior, and a user manual.
