The AEA NUVO N22 is an active near-field ribbon microphone designed for close-up recording of instruments and vocals. It combines the warm, natural character typical of AEA ribbon microphones with an extended high-frequency response, greater clarity, and a significantly reduced proximity effect.

Thanks to its balanced response even when positioned just a few centimeters from the sound source, the AEA N22 is particularly well-suited for recording studios, isolation booths, and small spaces. Close placement helps reduce unwanted ambient sound while maintaining definition and naturalness.

Ribbon Microphone Designed for Near-Field Use

Unlike many traditional ribbon microphones, the AEA N22 was developed specifically for close-up recording. Its reduced proximity effect allows the microphone to be placed close to the sound source without causing an excessive boost in low frequencies.

The response remains balanced at distances ranging approximately from 2.5 to 45 cm, offering considerable placement flexibility. This feature makes it easier to find the right balance between body, presence, and detail.

Reduction of Ambient Noise

Placing the microphone close to the sound source helps minimize room reflections and acoustic interference that can cause problems in small spaces or isolated booths.

The AEA N22 thus delivers a direct, well-defined signal that integrates easily into the mix, even when the recording environment lacks ideal acoustic treatment.

Extended high end and classic AEA warmth

The AEA NUVO N22 retains the smoothness and musical character of ribbon microphones while offering greater high-frequency extension. The result is a clear, detailed sound, free of the harshness that can characterize some condenser microphones.

The slight boost in presence around 3 kHz enhances transient definition and the intelligibility of the source. This characteristic allows the signal to stand out in the mix without necessarily requiring the use of a second microphone.

Ideal for instruments, amplifiers, and vocals

The AEA N22 is particularly effective on electric and bass guitar amplifiers, acoustic guitars, vocals, kick drums, percussion, and numerous other sources.

The combination of controlled low frequencies, present midrange, and extended high frequencies allows for full and balanced recordings right from the capture stage.

Figure-8 bidirectional polar pattern

The bidirectional polar pattern captures sound from the front and rear of the microphone, while strongly attenuating sound from the sides. This configuration allows for precise control over the amount of direct sound, ambient sound, and interference from other instruments.

Lateral rejection can reach very high levels when the unwanted sound source is positioned perpendicular to the microphone’s front-to-back axis.

Flexibility in Recording Techniques

The AEA N22 can be used alone for mono recordings or paired with a second compatible microphone for stereo configurations such as Blumlein and Mid-Side.

Consistent off-axis response helps preserve a natural timbre even when the sound source is not perfectly aligned with the front of the microphone.

Active Electronics for Modern Preamplifiers

The AEA NUVO N22 features active electronics powered by P48 phantom power. The 92 Ω output impedance ensures a stable interface with professional microphone preamps, mixers, and audio interfaces.

The active circuit provides a higher output level than a traditional passive ribbon microphone and reduces dependence on the electrical characteristics of the preamp being used.

High Sound Pressure Level Handling

With a maximum sound pressure level of 141 dB SPL, the AEA N22 can be used even in front of very powerful sound sources. It is therefore suitable for high-volume amplifiers, drum kits, percussion, and wind instruments.

Its rugged yet lightweight design makes it easy to position even in tight spaces, such as above a drum set or in front of speaker cabinets and acoustic instruments.

Pure aluminum ribbon element

The transducer uses a corrugated pure aluminum ribbon just 1.8 μm thick. Its extremely low mass allows it to quickly follow the dynamic variations of the sound source, preserving transients, harmonics, and nuances of performance.

The large ribbon element contributes to the extended low-frequency response and the natural, smooth, and three-dimensional character typical of AEA microphones.
