Stereo Monitor Controller
The SPL 2Control is a compact stereo monitor controller with a clean, transparent sound, designed to manage near-field and full-range monitors in home studios, project studios, and mixing consoles. Fully analog, it combines source selection, volume control, switching between two pairs of speakers, and two headphone amplifiers with Crossfeed—SPL’s technology that ensures mixes made on headphones sound accurate on speakers—all in a single desktop unit.
You can connect two stereo sources to the 2Control—such as an audio interface and a reference player—and listen to them on two pairs of stereo monitors, for example, near-field and full-range. A third mono output is dedicated to a subwoofer or a mono reference speaker, which is useful for checking the mix’s compatibility in mono.
The 2Control’s inputs are additive: if you activate both sources, the signals are mixed together. This allows you to listen to the DAW output and a second device—such as a keyboard, synthesizer, or secondary computer—simultaneously, without an external mixer.
The inputs accept balanced line signals. IN1 is calibrated to the standard studio level of +4 dBu, while the sensitivity of IN2 can be set to -10 dBV, ideal for connecting consumer CD and DVD players and comparing them at the same volume level as your mix.
The listening level is adjusted using an ALPS RK27 “Big Blue” active-control potentiometer—renowned for its precise channel tracking—and a 45 mm all-aluminum knob. Adjustment is smooth and precise, even at the low volumes typical of longer mixing sessions.
The 2Control features two active headphone output stages, each with its own level control: ideal when working in pairs, such as with the artist or producer in the control room.
In headphones, the stereo image appears unnaturally wide: vocals, instruments, and reverbs are positioned differently than when listening on monitors, and effects seem more pronounced. The Crossfeed control, derived from the Phonitor Matrix SPL, corrects this effect by continuously adjusting the signal balance between channels—that is, the interaural level difference. The virtual speaker angle and center level are preset to the most commonly used values, 30° and -1 dB, so you immediately get a headphone listening experience consistent with that of the monitors.
