The 230e is a combination of a triple microphone preamplifier, envelope follower with variable decay time and a pulse generator connected downstream of the envelope follower. The outputs of the preamps are normalized to the inputs of the envelope follower. Both units can work independently if required. In addition to the individual outputs of the preamplifiers, there is also a mix output that mixes these three outputs together, so that the module can also be used as a rudimentary mixer.

The three inputs have a combined XLR/jack connector that accepts both balanced and unbalanced microphone or line signals. The gain can be switched between +10dB, +25dB or +40dB or infinitely variable via potentiometer. Phantom power can be activated optionally and is then applied to all XLR connectors. The preamplifier signals are available at separate outputs as well as a mix output. An Expand input provides an additional audio input. The module can therefore also be used as a rudimentary mixer.

The outputs of the preamps are normalized to the inputs of the three envelope followers. A signal patched into the input of the envelope follower interrupts this normalization. Each envelope follower has a four-segment LED chain, which indicates the intensity of the generated CVs and also an excess of 10V. The parameter “Decay” determines how fast the envelope follower follows a decreasing signal level and is infinitely variable.

The three pulse generators are powered by the signals of the envelope followers. They generate held 5V signals as well as short 10V transient signals. If the voltage of the envelope signal exceeds 5V, a 5V pulse is held at the putput.

The 10V transient is generated in two modes.

• In normal mode a 10V trigger is generated whenever the envelope signal exceeds the 5V threshold.
• In “Trans” mode, pulses are only generated when the voltage rises significantly – regardless of the level.

In this mode, transients can also be extracted with background noise present. This feature is especially useful when extracting pulse signals from drum sounds.

With the exception of the input gain of the preamps, all parameters can be stored and recalled with the preset manager in the 206e or 225e modules.
