NUVO-series nearfield phantom-powered bidirectional short ribbon microphone stereo pair
The AEA N13 Stereo Kit includes a hand-selected pair of active ribbon microphones from the NUVO series, designed to deliver an extremely natural, detailed, and consistent stereo image. Thanks to the two perfectly matched microphones, the kit is an ideal solution for professional stereo techniques used in recording ensembles, acoustic instruments, orchestras, environments, and high-quality productions.
The N13 model was created to round out AEA’s NUVO lineup, positioning itself between the N22—optimized for close miking—and the N8—designed for long-distance ambient recording. The N13’s strength lies in its exceptional performance when recording at distances ranging from approximately 20 to 90 centimeters, where it delivers an ideal balance of detail, depth, and naturalness.
The new magnetic driver and the pure aluminum ribbon, just 1.2 microns thick, make the N13 the first AEA bidirectional microphone not part of the Big Ribbon family. This design significantly improves transient response and high-frequency definition while maintaining the smoothness and musicality typical of ribbon microphones.
The AEA N13 offers an open and detailed sound character, with superior brilliance compared to the N22 model. It is particularly well-suited for string instruments, acoustic guitars, percussion, drum overheads, and any source requiring greater definition in the high-frequency range without sacrificing naturalness.
Even when recording wind instruments and vocals up close, the microphone maintains excellent transparency, responding very well to any EQ adjustments during the mix.
The Stereo Kit configuration fully enhances the characteristics of the N13 design, allowing for extremely precise and consistent stereo recordings. Its acoustic behavior echoes the sound philosophy of the renowned AEA R88 Stereo Ribbon Microphone, offering a wide, stable stereo image rich in depth.
The JFET active electronics, powered by 48V phantom power, combined with the custom transformer used throughout the NUVO series, ensure a high output level and consistent performance with both high-end preamps and modern USB audio interfaces.
The small size and slate-gray finish allow the microphones to be easily positioned even in settings where minimizing visual impact is important, such as television productions, orchestral recordings, and live performances.
Each microphone is handcrafted at AEA’s facility in Pasadena, California, in accordance with the high manufacturing standards that distinguish the brand.
