The Schoeps MSTC 74 is a professional stereo condenser microphone designed for stereophonic recording using the ORTF technique. Considered one of the most popular models in the Schoeps catalog, it combines compact construction with extremely natural spatial quality, making it a reference tool for sound engineers and recording studios.
The system integrates two selected and matched Schoeps MK4 cardioid capsules mounted on a T-shaped stereo amplifier. The capsules are positioned 170 mm apart at an angle of 110°, a standard configuration of the ORTF technique that ensures precise stereo imaging and excellent localization of sound sources.
Thanks to its integrated design, the Schoeps MSTC74 enables the highest quality stereophonic recordings without the need to manually adjust capsule distance and angle. This solution significantly reduces setup time and ensures consistent results in every shooting situation.
The use of a single stand and a single stereo cable makes the system extremely practical both in the studio and during field recordings.
The ORTF technique is known to offer an ideal balance between stereo amplitude and mono compatibility. The MSTC 74 ensures very precise localization of sources and natural reconstruction of the acoustic environment.
Because of its spatial performance and extremely natural frequency response, the Schoeps MSTC 74 is frequently used as the main microphone for ensemble, choir, and classical music recordings. In many cases it enables excellent results even without the use of additional spot microphones.
One of the main advantages of the MSTC is its ease of use: capsule distance and angle are already calibrated according to the ORTF standard, eliminating the need for manual adjustments. This makes it suitable for both experienced technicians and for quick shooting situations.
The microphone uses an XLR-5M connector for stereo output. It can be connected directly to dedicated stereo cables such as the Schoeps KS 5 U or to breakouts such as AK SU/2U.
For outdoor use, it is possible to combine the MSTC 74 with professional windproof systems such as Cinela Albert or Cinela OSIX suspensions with dedicated windbreakers. Alternatively, Schoeps also offers outdoor ORTF configurations based on CCM microphones.
