What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the term "passive equalizer"? Probably, at first, you will think of the airy high frequencies and rich lows as well as the cuts and boosts that can be used side by side.
These types of equalizers have been around since the early 1950s; the most famous is Pulse Techniques' Pultec EQP-1, the first to provide simultaneous passive filter circuits along with high-quality line amplifiers. The downside of the EQP-1 was its lack of precision frequency isolation capability, but it was capable of modifying any sound in its core. Many modern equalizers are based on the original EQP-1 in both structure and function, which could prove limiting in a modern music environment and production.
Gailab Audio's goal in the lab was to improve on the classic concept. First, they added an additional midrange filter between the low and high frequency filters in order to expand the unit's potential in the modern music environment.
They have retained the ability to simultaneously cut and boost the low and high bands, so they can perform all the operations normally expected of an equalizer. In addition, the shifting function can be used on these bands to shift the average frequency of simultaneous cut and boost relative to each other.
After numerous bench tests using the equalizer in real-world applications, the versatility of the unit exceeded expectations. It proved suitable for both recording and master coloring or equalization in general.
It is fair to say that it dominates the entire frequency range and, in most cases, delivers excellent performance under extreme conditions, hence the name Empress
