MPC Portable Workstation with Built-in Sampler, Synth, and Speakers - Retro Edition
The Akai Professional MPC Live III Retro is a portable MPC workstation for producing, performing, and recording without a computer. This edition is identical in every way to the black MPC Live III, both in hardware and software, but stands out for its special retro-style gray finish, which evokes the historic MPCs and makes it a coveted item among collectors as well. Inside, you’ll find everything you need to complete a track in a single device: a sampler, synth, sequencer, clip launching, effects, and a full-featured audio interface.
The Retro Edition’s gray color is a direct homage to the machines that defined beatmaking. Under the hood, however, lies the hardware of the Live III series: an octa-core processor—the fastest in the series—paired with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, expandable via SD card or a 2.5-inch SATA drive. The MPC3 operating system with the MPC Pro Pack combines classic beatmaking features with modern production and performance tools.
The Retro isn’t just a display piece: it offers the same performance and features as the standard version, so you can take it to the studio or on stage every day, standing out with a design that speaks directly to the MPC’s legacy.
The 16 new MPCe pads with 3D sensors are velocity- and pressure-sensitive and feature RGB backlighting. In addition to classic finger drumming, they allow for X/Y control on the pad and blending between samples and dynamic articulations: a single hit can change character depending on where and how you touch the pad, for more natural and creative performances.
Alongside traditional beatmaking, you’ll find a dedicated 16-step sequencer, clip-launching functions with Clip Matrix, and assignable Performance buttons, along with the Touch Strip for dynamic control. The 7-inch multi-touch color display and physical controls make your workflow intuitive, whether you’re building a pattern in the studio or launching clips live.
The MPC Live III Retro handles up to 32 instrument plugins simultaneously and 16 audio tracks. The Pro Stems Separation feature allows you to break down a track into its components to sample drums, bass, vocals, or instruments independently—an invaluable resource for anyone working with sampling. The included library features over 1,000 MPC-ready kits and instrument plugins, curated by expert sound designers, so you can start producing as soon as you turn on the machine.
The ADC/DAC converters operate at 24-bit resolution with sampling rates of 44.1, 48, and 96 kHz, while the internal DSP operates at 32-bit floating-point precision, ensuring clean audio and ample headroom even during the most demanding processing tasks.
A condenser microphone, speakers, and a rechargeable battery with approximately 4 hours of runtime are built into the unit. You can sample a sound on the fly, listen to the result, and continue working wherever you are, without having to connect monitors or a power source.
The connectivity is designed to integrate the MPC into any setup. Two XLR/TRS combo inputs and two RCA phono inputs accommodate microphones, instruments, and turntables; six balanced TRS outputs and a 1/4" headphone output handle monitoring and sends. Four 3.5 mm stereo CV/Gate outputs interface with modular and analog synths, while two 5-pin MIDI IN and two MIDI OUT ports, along with 32 MIDI channels via USB-C, control the rest of your gear. When connected to a computer, the MPC also functions as a 24-channel audio interface and as a controller for Ableton Live thanks to its dedicated mode. The device also features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, two USB Type-A ports, and one USB Type-C port.
