24-channel analog console with motorized faders, DAW controller, and 2 1073 preamps
The Neve 8424 with motorized faders is the console designed for the modern hybrid studio: it combines the analog summing and sound of the Neve 80 Series with full DAW control. The 24 motorized faders handle both analog levels and session automation, while the legendary Marinair transformers—which made the 80 Series famous in the 1980s—ensure the brand’s unmistakable sonic character. With two built-in 1073 preamps, 500-series slots, and a large-format console monitor section, the 8424 becomes the centerpiece of a professional recording and mixing studio.
The 24 motorized, self-calibrating faders transform the 8424 into a full-featured DAW controller. With Active Fader mode, you can quickly switch between controlling analog levels and DAW levels, integrating digital automation with the analog mix. Transport and automation controls remain active at all times, while VPOT controls manage pan, aux sends, and plug-in parameters directly from the surface.
The recall system restores the routing configuration, soft switches, and motorized fader positions with a single command. Internal snapshots save multiple console settings between sessions, and offline storage lets you save and load recall files for each project.
The Marinair transformers on the mix bus, AFL, and cue bus are at the heart of the 8424’s sound, delivering an authentic Neve mix with depth and cohesion. The channel strips are an evolution of the Genesys and 88R consoles, featuring a wide bandwidth and precise stereo imaging. The inserts and Marinair transformers make analog mix processing sound natural.
The mix bus features dedicated processing with an equalizer and stereo image enhancement—valuable tools during the mixing process. The routing matrix easily sends the signal to groups and mixes, while four mono groups with EQ and a dedicated matrix, along with dual effects outputs, expand the possibilities for managing and integrating analog FX units.
Each channel features two independent inputs—one for the DAW return and one for recording—which can be switched instantly with a single button, plus a third input for dual-layer use: you can connect 24 DAW returns and 24 line inputs simultaneously and mix up to 48 mono signals. Digital trim precisely adjusts input and output levels, and each channel has a digitally controlled direct output for tracking. The 24 balanced inserts, three mono aux sends, and balanced cue bus with Marinair transformers round out the routing flexibility.
For recording, the 8424 features two independent 1073 microphone preamps—Neve’s legendary benchmark for vocals and instruments—managed by Smart Routing for overdubs and tracking from the recording room or control room. Two Class A instrument inputs, located under the armrest, allow you to record guitars, basses, and keyboards directly from the console.
Two internal 500 Series slots accommodate preamps or processing modules, dynamically inserted into the signal path alongside the 1073s and DIs. The OPX connection also allows you to remotely control up to three 1073OPX units as fully integrated preamps, with digital display of all gain levels.
Three stereo speaker outputs, each with trim, drive up to three sets of speakers, with 85 dB SPL calibration, dim, and mono sum. The cue system, three-way talkback, and two headphone outputs with independent mixes, located under the armrest, simplify communication between the artist, engineer, and producer. PPM and VU metering accurately monitor signals, while professional I/O connections include 25-pin D-Sub and balanced jacks on the rear and front panels.
