4-pole multimode VCF/VCA filter with overdrive for the Warthog system
The Adamsynths Multimode VCF VCA is the filter module of the Warthog system: a modern and versatile multimode VCF, paired with a VCA and an input mixer with overdrive. In a single module, you’ll find the entire signal chain needed to shape the sound of your oscillators—from mixing sources to filtering to dynamic amplitude control—with a wide range of modulation paths for ever-changing patches.
The filter offers four selectable responses: 4-pole low-pass, 2-pole low-pass, 2-pole band-pass, and 2-pole high-pass. The 4-pole mode delivers a sharp, full-bodied cut for basses and leads; the 2-pole low-pass is softer and more open; while the band-pass and high-pass modes let you isolate portions of the spectrum, lighten up pads, and create nasal or percussive timbres.
In low-pass modes, Q compensation isn’t just enabled—it’s also adjustable: you can decide how much of the low frequencies to restore as you increase the resonance. This way, you can maintain the body of the sound even at high resonances, or let the filter thin out for a more classic character, depending on what the patch calls for.
To control the cutoff frequency, there is a V/OCT input with tracking that can be switched between OFF, ½, and FULL—useful for making the filter follow the keyboard or for using it in self-oscillation as a pitched source. In addition, there are three frequency modulation inputs, each with its own intensity control.
FCV1 directly modulates the filter. FCV2 has a selectable source: it can be its dedicated input, the audio signal before the VCF (taken from the mixer), or the audio signal after the VCF. The two audio options open the door to audio-rate modulations and self-modulation behaviors, ideal for gritty timbres and complex textures. FCV3 also directly modulates the filter, but can be switched so that the incoming ENV signal controls the VCA after the filter.
A RESO CV input with dedicated control allows you to modulate resonance with LFOs, envelopes, or sequencers, adding animation and dynamic accents to the filtered sound.
The VCF features three audio inputs with adjustable levels, mixed in a mixer stage before the filter. By pushing the levels, you can saturate this stage, with an LED indicating overdrive: the resulting saturation is inherent to the mixer’s design itself, adding warmth, density, and grit to the signal before it reaches the filter.
The module offers a separate output for the VCF and a VCA with its own input and output, which you can use after the filter or independently on other sources in your system. The VCA also has a dedicated CV input, in addition to the ability to be controlled by the ENV signal via FCV3.
A dedicated menu contains the resonance calibration parameters for each filter mode: resonance level for 4-pole low-pass, 2-pole low-pass, 2-pole band-pass, and 2-pole high-pass. This allows you to balance the behavior of the four filter responses and tailor them to the rest of your Warthog system.
