Erica Synths EDU DIY Drum Sequ encer is a kit from the mki x es.EDU educational series, designed to teach the fundamentals of analog sequencer design through a hands-on, minimalist approach.
Unlike modern drum sequencers, which are often complex and microcontroller-based, this project uses a small number of logic chips to create a hands-on, immediate and deeply musical rhythm engine.
Each of the 4 independent channels is programmed in real time via a single button to insert or remove steps. Patterns automatically loop and can be shortened on the fly from 16 steps to 12 or 7 steps to create variable polyrhythms and grooves.
Each channel can be set to half-time mode for slower, evolving grooves. Accents are managed via two synchronizable analog LFOs, which add dynamics and rhythmic movement without resorting to complex digital solutions.
A simple resistor-DAC circuit converts rhythmic patterns into stepped voltages, ideal for modulating pitch, decay or other parameters in your modular system. This makes the module not only a drum sequencer, but also a source of creative modulation.
The sequencer integrates an internal clock with sixteenth, eighth and quarter outputs, and can be synchronized with external devices, making it perfect for performance modular systems and hybrid setups.
