Digital keyboard synthesizer
KORG modwave is a digital keyboard synthesizer equipped with a powerful synthesis engine that combines wavetable synthesis with as many as 230 million possible variations with sample based PCM and allows you to import waveforms in Serum and WaveEdit formats. You can bring any parameter to life using the flexible modulation system that includes 4 envelopes, 5 LFOs, the dual mode processor and two key-track generators, as well as multi-lane Motion Sequencing and the innovative Kaoss Physics. By playing up to 4 simultaneous wavetables per voice in a single Program, modwave maintains a polyphony of 32 voices. And if you want, you can layer two Programs to double the sonic possibilities! With the Hold function you keep a note or chord active indefinitely.
In 1985, the Korg DW-8000 combined a digital wavetable with a VCF filter to provide users with sounds not reproducible with analog oscillators. This instrument is still a cult appreciated by many today. Modwave stems from DW’s legacy to establish itself as a new and powerful synthesizer featuring an extensive wavetable of oscillators, interesting filters, wide and flexible modulation possibilities, incredible polyphony, intuitive pattern step sequencer and a large number of controls that put all the editable elements in a sound or musical phrase at our fingertips.
The Korg modwave is a powerful wavetable synthesizer full of distinctive tones, with the innovative Kaoss Physics control and Motion Sequencing 2.0. Korg modwave introduces two new tools to dynamically manage sound: Kaoss Physics and Motion Sequencing 2.0. Kaoss Physics combines a Kaoss-style x / y pad with a modular gaming-inspired control system for an interactive control experience that is powerful and fun to explore. Motion Sequencing 2.0 brings to this instrument the organic and constantly evolving characteristics of patterns appreciated by many in wavestate sounds, including “multiple lanes” and real-time recording to support you in creating complex sounds and evolutionary phrases that no other sequencer built into a synth is capable of generating.
As in Wave Sequencing 2.0 (wavestate: click here for info) and in Altered FM (opsix: click here for info), modwave wavetable synthesis has evolved to provide you with a unique sounding instrument with a layout that sees a potentiometer for each function in order to allow you a quick, simple and effective manipulation of sounds. To begin with, there are hundreds of preset sounds enhanced by this particular architecture, organized by categories, easily recalled from the dedicated buttons on the dashboard and immediately variable by interacting with the 4 Modulation potentiometers.
Modwave’s unique wavetable includes aggressive bass and lead, cinematic, mystical and lush pads and settings that will provide a new sonic dimension to your music productions. However, this is only the beginning. Those who are constantly looking for new sounds will find themselves in front of an innovative instrument with unexplored horizons, difficult to reach by other synthesizers. As soon as you find a new sound you will discover that there are many others that can be created.
The modwave synthesis engine
When we define the wavetable of the “deep” oscillators, we are not kidding at all. We start with 200 wavetables, each divided into 64 distinct waveforms: thousands of individual waveforms. With over 30 Modifiers you can vary the basic sound character and with 13 Morph Types process them in real time. Create new hybrids starting from any of the two wavetables using the particular A / B Blend in real time.
Let’s do a quick calculation: there are more than 230 million possible variations in this wavetable; without considering the modulations yet! We should stop here, right? It’s no … You can upload your waveforms in Serum and WaveEdit formats, there is enough space for thousands more. Or, you can layer wavetables with samples from the multi-GB built-in PCM library.
Each Program consists of 2 full-featured wavetable oscillators, a sub-oscillator / noise generator and one of twelve filters including the aggressive MS-20 derived, the softer Polysix-style and the powerful new Multi Filter. . You can bring any parameter to life using the flexible modulation system that includes 4 envelopes, 5 LFOs, the dual mode processor and two key-track generators, as well as multi-lane Motion Sequencing and Kaoss Physics. Even with all this synthesis power, playing up to 4 simultaneous wavetables per voice in a single Program, the modwave maintains a polyphony of 32 voices; amazing for a wavetable synth. Ah, just for… If you want, you can layer two Programs to double the sonic possibilities!
Kaoss Physics simulates a ball rolling on a surface and / or hitting from one wall to another. Start the ball by touching the X / Y pad with your finger, or launch it automatically using sources such as Gate + Damper as trigger. You can also control the movement of the ball by keeping your fingers on the pad. The position of the ball gives rise to modulation signals that can exert control over any target you are interested in: X and Y positions, distance from center, angle relative to the X axis. This method of applying automated modulations is being used for the first time and the results are compelling and evolutionary to say the least.
On the surface there is a virtual protuberance that can rise and fall, like a valley or a hill. You can set the height and width of this element and choose between different shapes and slopes. It is possible to adjust the friction, to slow the ball down as it travels. On the four sides of the surface there are walls and when the ball hits one, it bounces. Walls can slow the ball down, or speed it up like the bumpers on a pinball machine. The walls can eventually be removed, so the surface extends to the opposite side like in a vintage arcade video game. The modeled environment can create specific modulation effects. For example, set a negative height in the center of the hill to make the modulation value return to 0. Or you can assign a positive value to the hill on the side or corner to attenuate the modulation intensity at that point. Many of the parameters, including Tilt, Friction, Time, Bump Height and Position, are in turn modulable, you can even control them from Kaoss Physics itself. For example, you can try to control the tilt of X with the Y axis of the Kaoss. The result is an interactive controller that amplifies human intervention in order to obtain complex musical results. Funny, don’t you think?
Motion Sequencing 2.0
Motion Sequencing 2.0 is an evolution of wavestate Wave Sequencing 2.0. Timing, Pitch, Shape and 4 sets of step sequence values are divided into “Lanes,” each with adjustable loop start and end points for even deeper and more adaptable modulation of the musical phrase. Each time the sequence moves forward, the automation lines are combined to generate the output. For example, a step sequence value can match a different duration, pitch or shape each time it is played. You can independently modulate all loop points of each automation line on each note, using velocity, LFOs, envelopes, Mod knobs or other controllers. Each note of a chord to play something different! The order of the steps of the automation lines can be randomized to each reproduction of the same. Finally, each of the steps can be randomly omitted with a modulable probability from 0 to 100%. The result is a constantly changing organic sound that responds to your control. The two built-in arpeggiators can interact with the Motion Sequence to provide you with even more sonic possibilities.
An extended synthesis engine that of the Korg modwave
What is a wavetable?
Wavetables are sets of individual cycles of digital waveforms organized in a specific order. The “position” of the wavetable determines which of the waveforms will be reproduced. Shifting the position with an envelope, LFO, or other modulation source will result in subtle or major tonal changes. Some wavetable systems abruptly switch from one waveform to another, others do it more smoothly in crossfade. modwave can do both.
Use more than 30 Modifiers to alter the character of each wavetable during playback. For example, isolate odd or even harmonics, add weight with anti-aliased quantization or saturation, or correct the aggressive character of old-school wavetable synths with Vintage 8 & 12 options.
The 13 Morph Types allow you to squeeze, squeeze, flex and alter wavetables in real time, changing their timbre and – when modulated – adding further movement to the sound. Sync gives rise to classic swept-sync tones using a single oscillator. The 3 special Morph Type FM, AM, and Ring Mod modulate Osc 2 with Osc 1 and can also be used on samples.
A / B Blend
The A / B mode is unique in its kind as it allows the oscillators to mix any two wavetables with each other with phase and synchronous precision, a different situation than the layering of the voices, which opens a new dimension to waveforms. intermediate. Give more body to subtle wave shapes or more aggression to a soft tone. Merge two different modifier versions of the same wavetable. Of course, the A / B Blend can also be modulated in real time.
Gigabytes of audio samples
The wavetables sound divine when coupled with audio samples and in the KORG modwave distributed in Italy by Algam EKO (click here) the oscillators can host both elements. In the library of audio samples supplied with the modwave we find included various Korg material, a selection of libraries of the Kronos (click here) and the Krome (click here), and many new sounds produced by Korg itself, by Airwave and Francis Preve , as well as a bank of Plugin Gurus.
You will never run out of filter
Add a vintage character to your sound by processing it with the MS-20’s aggressive Lowpass and Highpass filter emulations, or apply the powerful, yet softer lowpass derived from the Polysix. All have been improved by introducing a gain parameter to better manage them at high resonance values. Sculpt and refine with a collection of lowpass, highpass, bandpass and resonant notch filters at 2 and 4 poles. Alternatively, you can experiment with the particular KORG Multi Filter, which offers a simultaneous and modulable interaction between different filter modes, now equipped with presets that can be managed by a potentiometer for easier exploration of its many sonic possibilities.
Unlimited modulation and control in the Korg modwave
Packed with potentiometers and controls, modwave invites you to explore. Oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs and effects are all at your fingertips on the dashboard. 4 programmable Mod Knobs are assigned to give you the best experience of controlling the generated sound right out of the box. Use the controls in the live performances and save the result. The Hold button allows you to leave the notes or chords active indefinitely while you explore the controls or play other instruments in your setup. Add Kaoss Physics and Pitch Bend and Modulation wheels and you’ll always have multiple dimensions of expressiveness in real time. Do you want to go deeper? Virtually all the controls on the dashboard and many of the parameters on the screen can be modulated. You can even modulate the settings of a single Motion Sequence step! With Mod Processors you can shape a modulation signal using quantization, curves and more.
An arsenal of effects in the Korg modwave
The effects of the modwave are of excellent quality, production-ready. Each Layer has three dedicated effect slots and, in addition, the Performance features a master reverb and a parametric eq. You will be able to load the effects useful to you by selecting them from a list that includes the most traditional processors such as compressors, equalizers, phasers, stereo delays, as well as various effects with a unique and distinctive character: Wave Shaper, Talking Modulator, Reverse Delay, Multiband Mod Delay and the Overb derived from OASYS and Kronos, VOX amp simulators, VOX wah, tape echo with multiple heads and a collection of the most used guitar pedals.
Randomness as a source of inspiration
Do you want to get out of the usual routine and venture into sounds that are a source of creativity for you? A dedicated button, identifiable on the dashboard thanks to the icon depicting a nut, allows you to start intelligent randomization processes that will give life to new sounds, randomly varying the entire sound or some of its parameters such as oscillators, filter, or effects. You can use the sound obtained as it is, or use it as a starting point for creating your own custom sound.
Editor / Librarian software for the modwave KORG
The modwave Editor / Librarian allows you to edit and organize sounds through your computer with MacOS or Windows operating system, including new Apple computers based on the M1 processor. Using the networking mode via USB for high-speed communication this application works as a real second front panel for the instrument, so you don’t have to synchronize or transfer data. Animations show you the effect of modulation in real time, an important help when you are programming.
Set List and seamless transition from one sound to another
Set Lists allow you to organize your modwave Performances, to guarantee you immediate access during live performances or in the rehearsal room. Thanks to the Smooth Sound Transition, all previously played voices will have a natural decay, including any effect, even when you load another sound.
The connections of the korg modwave
The balanced stereo outputs allow you to connect to any recording or listening system, a stereo headphone output allows you to play intimately, without disturbing. The MIDI DIN connectors ensure integration into traditional MIDI set-ups, while the class-compliant USB “B” port connects to Windows and MacOS computers for the transmission and reception of MIDI data.
Designed in the Californian headquarters of R&D KORG
KORG’s California-based R&D department created the original wavestate and Wavestation, participated in the development of OASYS and Kronos, and developed core technologies used in numerous KORG instruments. The modwave reflects their concept of aesthetics, provides exceptional sounds and offers extreme flexibility thanks to modern technologies. Wavestate’s leading sound designers, Belgian artist Airwave and Peter “Ski” Schwartz, Francis Preve and Richard Devine have joined KORG’s renowned “voicing team” to bring the incredible modwave sound library to life.
