Today we discuss a very interesting device in the analog world: the Phoenix Audio Scion, a 16-channel, rack-mount summing mixer designed to bring all the musicality of analog summing into a modern, compact setup. This tool will appeal to producers, sound engineers, and studios looking for a more three-dimensional and deeper sound than in-the-box digital summing.
Part of the Nicerizer family, the Phoenix Audio Scion is not just a summing box, but a true full analog mixer. It features 16 discrete, transformerless Class A input stages for transparent yet musical sound. Each channel offers 21-position analog panning and the ability to activate a saturation circuit via the Drive button.
On the output front, the device features four selectable modes: Clean, Main (the most colorful), Mix (for a blend of clean and color) and Super Iron. The outputs are active simultaneously, allowing A/B comparisons or creative routing. Input connections are DB-25 (dsub), while outputs are TRS balanced.
The Phoenix Scion allows the insertion of external processors (outboards) thanks to the insert section. In addition, a second unit can be connected to expand the sum up to 32 channels. Another useful tool is the built-in Stereo Width, which allows you to shrink or widen the stereo image by up to 25 percent-a powerful control for the spatiality of the final mix.
The sonic heart of the Phoenix Audio Scion lies in its Class A circuitry and the presence of the custom DSOP2 transformer (in Main mode), which adds warmth, presence, and pleasing harmonic saturation. Clean mode, on the other hand, provides maximum linearity and precision, ideal for mastering or transparent mixes.
Mix mode allows a smooth transition between cleanliness and color, while Super Iron is a more driven option for those seeking grit and character from analog hardware.
The Phoenix Audio Scion is an instrument that brings back the magic of analog summing in a compact, solid and highly flexible chassis. It is designed for those working in hybrid environments, combining digital workflow with analog quality and musicality. Perfect for enriching sound with depth, stereo width, and controlled saturation.
If you are looking for a solution to enhance the three-dimensionality of your mix, with truly usable sound options and an intuitive interface, the Scion deserves your attention.
