The Erica Synths EDU DIY EG is an optimized ADSR envelope generator designed for the Eurorack format, developed within the mki x es.EDU educational series in collaboration with Moritz Klein. Modules like this are fundamental to analog synthesis: without envelope generators there would be no acid basslines, punchy techno kicks, or evolving atmospheric pads.
This version has been cleverly simplified: it has only 3 controls, yet retains great operational flexibility. With Sustain on, the module generates an ASR (Attack/Sustain/Release) envelope. By turning Sustain to minimum, it turns into an AD (Attack/Decay) generator that ignores gate length. The Decay and Release parameters share the same control, making the operational flow immediate and intuitive.
The built-in looping function allows the module to be used as a cyclic source, opening up creative possibilities beyond its classic use as an envelope. The inverted output adds further versatility, particularly useful in complex patches and dynamic modulations within advanced modular systems.
The mki x es.EDU series was created with a clear goal: to teach how to design analog synthesizer circuits from scratch. This kit is designed not only to be assembled and installed in the rack, but to take the user step-by-step through understanding the design choices and their sonic impact.
The complete EDU DIY system includes 9 kits to build a complete modular monosynth: sequencer, VCO, wavefolder, noise & S&H, mixer, VCF, envelope generator, dual VCA and stereo mixer with headphone amplifier. A Eurorack case with dedicated DIY PSU is also available. The system requires the use of 2 EG modules, so those wishing to build the entire setup will need to purchase two kits.
Each kit includes an in-depth manual of more than 40 pages (downloadable separately) that explores not only the electronics of the circuit, but also the fundamentals of sound synthesis. The project aims to inspire new designers and contribute to the evolution of electronic music technology.
All kits in the series are designed to be simple to assemble and accompanied by detailed documentation. However, no technical support is provided in case of malfunctions due to DIY assembly.
