In the landscape of professional audio, few consoles can boast the legendary aura of the Solid State Logic 4000 E. Introduced in 1979, the 4000 E not only revolutionized the way music was produced, it literally shaped the sound of the 1980s and beyond. Its assertive, "in-your-face" timbre, with advanced midrange and aggressive compression, became a recognizable sonic trademark worldwide.

The 4000 E represents the heart of the SSL legacy. Its modular architecture, extreme flexibility in routing, and integration of dynamic processing and EQ made it the console of choice for high-end studios from the start. It has been used on countless iconic records by artists such as Peter Gabriel, Madonna, Prince, Kate Bush, U2, Phil Collins, and Oasis.
Mix engineers such as Chris Lord-Alge, Hugh Padgham, Andy Wallace and others have chosen it to forge productions that still set the standard, confirming its status as a "reference" console.
Early E-series models marked the transition to the Jensen JT-115K-E transformer, with a more linear and less colorful response than the B-series. Most 4000 E's mounted electronically balanced preamplifiers, with continuously variable gain and -20 dB pads to handle high sound pressure sources.
The dynamics section of the 4000 E defined the compression and gating typical of the decade. Thanks to the Aphex Class A VCA with feed-forward architecture, response was fast and punchy. Later replaced by the dbx VCA, the circuit offered programmable attack (3ms-30ms) and FAST ATTACK mode. Revision 4 introduced further improvements such as logarithmic release and soft-knee, considered by many to be the most advanced form of the SSL compressor.
The famous four-band EQ has gone through several revisions:
The sound of the 4000 E lives on through hardware such as the Revival 4000 and 500 Series modules, as well as in software form with the component-modeled SSL 4K E plug-in, including the legendary dbx 202 "gold can" VCA. The result? Faithful, harmonically rich and deeply expressive reproduction.
Whether an original unit or a modern emulation, the SSL 4000 E remains a must-have choice for anyone seeking an incisive, midrange, professional mix. It is the console that made history-and it is still here, more alive than ever.
