The Gainlab Audio GLA-OC1 Governor is a dual-channel tube optical compressor designed to expand the possibilities traditionally associated with optical compression. Inspired by the concept of Bishop’s Dual Slope optical compressor, it combines the warm character of vacuum tubes with an extremely versatile dynamic control system, suitable for both gentle processing and more aggressive compression. The Governor can be used during tracking, mixing, and mastering, offering three different compression modes. This allows you to switch from gentle leveling inspired by the behavior of classic optical compressors like the LA-2A to decidedly more aggressive sounds, while maintaining the musicality typical of optical technology.

Dual Slope and Dual Threshold for Advanced Dynamic Control

At the heart of the Gainlab Audio Governor is the Dual Slope design, which introduces a second level of intervention beyond the initial threshold. When the signal exceeds this second threshold, the release curve becomes steeper and the compression ratio increases significantly, allowing for multi-stage dynamic control within a single processor.

First Threshold: Gentle Compression and Musical Control

The first threshold sets a lower compression ratio with a soft knee, ideal for controlling dynamics in a gradual and natural way.

Second threshold: more incisive and aggressive compression

Once the second threshold is exceeded, the Governor applies a higher compression ratio with a more pronounced knee. The interaction between the two stages allows you to range from classic leveling to modern, aggressive sounds—typically less associated with optical compressors.

Tube Boost, Sidechain, and the Governor’s Tone Control

The tube circuitry is complemented by the Tube Boost function, which is highly customizable and based on the concept introduced in the Gainlab Audio Empress equalizer.
