Stereo Tube Bus Compressor with Variable Bias and 5 Modes - Black

  • Variable-bias tube stereo bus compressor, inspired by classic vintage tube compressors
  • Linear, Modern, and Vintage sidechain modes, plus Focus and Punch hyper-compression modes
  • External sidechain insert via balanced XLR to control compression with an EQ or another source
  • Stepped controls and a single control for both channels, for quick and precise recall
  • Selectable rectifier with germanium, silicon, and LED diodes, plus AirBass and Tape passive output EQ
  • SPL 120V technology with a maximum level of +32.5 dBu, in a black finish

The SPL Venos Black is a variable-bias tube stereo bus compressor designed to add dimension, depth, and impact to stereo mixes, bus signals, and the master. It is based on the same principle as many legendary tube compressors—the bias-controlled remote cut-off tube—and expands on that character with two hyper-compression modes, Focus and Punch. All this is powered by SPL 120V technology, which ensures headroom and dynamics even when the bus is operating at high levels.

Variable-bias tube compressor for stereo buses and mixes

In the Venos, compression is generated by adjusting the valve’s grid voltage: the higher the bias voltage, the less signal passes from the cathode to the anode, and the more intense the compression. This modulation is the sum of Input, Threshold, Rectifier, Mode, Attack, and Release, and delivers the smooth, cohesive, and musical compression typical of tube compressors, which “binds” the mix together without crushing it.

41-step Input, Threshold, and Bias

Input, Threshold, and Bias are adjusted using 41-step potentiometers. The input gain, with a range of ±10 dB, determines how much the signal drives the compression section; the threshold sets the level above which the compressor engages; the Bias directly adjusts the tube’s operating voltage and thus the intensity of the compression.

Attack, Release, and Rectifier

Attack and Release each offer six settings, ranging from Fast to Slow. The rectifier that drives the tube stage offers three control characteristics achieved using germanium, silicon, and LED diodes: each modifies the attack and release behavior differently, giving you multiple compression characters within the same unit.

Venos Modes: From Filtered Sidechain to Hyper-Compression

Linear, Modern, and Vintage

The first three modes insert analog filters into the sidechain—not into the audio path—for frequency-selective compression. Linear removes only frequencies below 20 Hz from the control circuit. Modern uses a bandpass filter that makes the compressor less sensitive to low and, especially, high frequencies—a common approach in modern mixes to prevent the kick and bass from causing the bus to “pump.” Vintage applies a filter curve empirically defined by SPL designer Wolfgang Neumann.

Focus and Punch: Tube Hyper-Compression

In Focus mode, the Venos acts more decisively and focuses on the midrange, keeping the signal big and lively. In Punch mode, it adds a punch to the mix that’s unusual for a variable-bias tube compressor, without making the sound aggressive or fatiguing.

External Sidechain Insert (Ext SC)

In Ext SC mode, the control signal passes through the rear insert sidechain, with balanced XLR send and return connections. You can route it to an active or passive equalizer to shape the compressor’s response, or feed a completely different signal—such as a kick drum track—into the return to control the bus compression with an external source.

VU meter, AirBass and Tape EQ, and precise recall

The large black VU meter displays gain reduction in dB, with a GR Cal. trimmer to calibrate the reading. After the compression stage and before the output control, you’ll find the SPL passive EQ with two presets: AirBass, which boosts high and low frequencies by approximately 2 dB, and Tape, which replicates the roll-off characteristic of a tape machine. The output level is adjustable in 41 steps with a range of ±10 dB.

One control for both channels

All parameters are set using toggle switches or stepped potentiometers, and each control affects both the left and right channels simultaneously. Recalling a setting between tracks or comparing compression variations is instantaneous. The large, illuminated Active button activates the compressor.

SPL 120V Technology and Construction

The audio section operates at ±60 V thanks to SPL’s proprietary SUPRA operational amplifiers, with a maximum input and output level of +32.5 dBu: the mix bus passes through the Venos with ample headroom, even with high peaks. Inputs and outputs feature Neutrik XLR connectors with gold-plated contacts and electronic balancing, and a Ground switch on the rear panel isolates the internal ground from the chassis ground to eliminate any ground loops.

Black Version

The Black version offers all the features of the Venos in a black finish, designed to blend into racks and control rooms with a dark aesthetic.
