8-Channel Volume Controller

  • 8-channel active analog volume controller for DAW monitoring and surround sound systems
  • Direct-control 8-section ALPS potentiometer, with no VCA or digital circuitry
  • Backlit ALPS Mute button to protect speakers and hearing in the event of a computer crash
  • Balanced inputs and outputs via standard TASCAM DB25 connectors
  • Balancing stages with high common-mode rejection and a dynamic range of 123 dB
  • 45 mm solid aluminum knob and compact desktop chassis

SPL Volume 8 is an active 8-channel analog volume controller, designed as a DAW monitor controller and a surround preamp with a minimalist signal path. It controls up to eight speakers—such as a 5.1 or 7.1 system—with a single knob, maintaining signal quality at any listening volume. The compact desktop design lets you place it on your desk next to your monitor, always within easy reach.

Analog Volume Control: No Loss of Resolution

When volume is adjusted digitally—for example, in the DA converter—resolution decreases by one bit for every 6 dB of attenuation. When listening at approximately -30 dB relative to full scale—a very common scenario—about 5 bits are lost. The Volume 8 adjusts the level analogically using a direct-control, 8-section ALPS potentiometer, without VCAs or converters: the signal reaches the monitors with its full resolution, even at the lowest volumes.

Active Control: Stable Frequency Response and Phase at Any Volume

A passive, unbuffered potentiometer in the signal path alters the frequency response and phase, and does so differently depending on the set volume. In Volume 8, the control is active: the sound always remains consistent, whether at low volumes or high levels, and you can trust what you hear throughout your entire session.

Safety Mute to Prevent Computer Crashes

The illuminated ALPS Mute button has a dual function. On one hand, it mutes the speakers without touching the knob, so you can return to the exact volume level you left off at. On the other hand, it’s a true “panic” button: if your computer freezes and sends a full-scale signal, a single press mutes the output and protects your speakers and your hearing.

DB25 Connections and Construction

Inputs and outputs are balanced via DB25 connectors in accordance with the TASCAM standard, ready to be connected to the audio interface’s multichannel output and the monitor inputs using multipole cables. The balanced stages offer high common-mode rejection to minimize noise along the connections. The linear power supply with a toroidal transformer and the 45 mm solid aluminum knob—smooth and responsive to the touch—round out a studio-grade design in a compact footprint.
