In the modern age of digital recorders, DAWs and software plug-ins, the Mike-E is the ultimate solution for getting a clean and strong, yet warm and musical signal in the box… and it couldn’t be easier to work with – its front the layout of the panel is so linear that even inexperienced engineers will have no problem navigating to it right away.

When the engineering team at Empirical Labs sets out to build a microphone preamp, you can rest assured that it will deliver spectacular sound, be easy to work with, and provide functionality unlike any other device in its class. To that end, we proudly introduce the Mike-E, a high-performance transformer-coupled microphone preamplifier with a noise floor far below the internal noise of any microphone, combined with a first-of-its-kind compressor/saturator circuit that delivers the classic knee compression as well as versatile tonal “coloration” capable of replicating many of the best characteristics of vintage analog recording equipment.

Microphone preamplifier

The Mike-E features an ultra-low noise transformer input amplifier section with the gain under precise digital control. The signal noise far exceeds any existing microphone. Having used many mic preamps over the years, we’ve implemented a unique stepped gain control that should be impervious to the normal flaking that age causes to pans and flip switches. A villain!” The LED indicates when the input signal is overloading the circuit.

CompSat™

The CompSat’s unique circuit sets the Mike-E apart from all other mic preamps.

SATURATOR – a multi-stage soft-clipping circuit. At lower levels, a triode-like saturation affects the signal. As the level increases, a second unique clip circuit begins to flatten peaks more severely.

COMPRESSOR – based on the famous ELI Distressor, but with other features (including a much longer attack time). Preset ratios include: 2:1, 4:1, 8:1… and of course Nuke.

EMPHASIS – a two-stage circuit that slightly boosts and cuts high frequencies before the CompSat™ circuit, then cuts frequencies after it. Emphasis has the added benefit of enhancing the signal over the noise, which is why analog tape recorders used emphasis to begin with.

Telefunken TF39

The Telefunken TF39 Copperhead Deluxe is a variable-diagram tube microphone, an expansion of the TF29 Copperhead, with the addition of a double-diaphragm K67-type capsule that allows you to select between 3 different patterns: cardioid, omnidirectional and figure 8. This additional feature gives the TF39 has great flexibility and multiple options in the studio. From a sound and component point of view, the two microphones are almost identical.

The circuitry of the Telefunken TF39 Copperhead Deluxe Variable Diagram Tube Microphone consists of an American-made 5654W tube from unused original stock, a K67-type brass capsule, and a premium Lundahl transformer made in Sweden.

The microphone is characterized by a pleasant naturalness in the mid frequencies and an extended response in the low frequencies, as well as a beautiful copper-colored finish. The TF39 is designed and assembled in the USA.

Possible applications are for vocals and electric guitar, but the microphone also responds well to saxophones, upright pianos, banjos and drum pickups: bass drum, overheads and environments.

The package includes a muti pattern power supply M 903 , a cable for tube microphones M 803 , the carrying case ZC03 , a shock mount M 703 with adapter for M 782 and a protective case for the microphone.
