Empirical Labs EL9 Mike-E Telefunken TF51 – Bundle

Microphone preamplifier and large diaphragm tube condenser microphone bundle based on the specifications of ELA M 251E and C12.

Empirical Labs EL9 Mike-E

In the modern age of digital recorders, DAWs and software plug-ins, the Mike-E is the ultimate solution for getting a clean and strong, yet warm and musical signal in the box… and it couldn’t be easier to work with – its front the layout of the panel is so linear that even inexperienced engineers will have no problem navigating to it right away.

When the engineering team at Empirical Labs sets out to build a microphone preamp, you can rest assured that it will deliver spectacular sound, be easy to work with, and provide functionality unlike any other device in its class. To that end, we proudly introduce the Mike-E, a high-performance transformer-coupled microphone preamplifier with a noise floor far below the internal noise of any microphone, combined with a first-of-its-kind compressor/saturator circuit that delivers the classic knee compression as well as versatile tonal “coloration” capable of replicating many of the best characteristics of vintage analog recording equipment.

Microphone preamplifier

The Mike-E features an ultra-low noise transformer input amplifier section with the gain under precise digital control. The signal noise far exceeds any existing microphone. Having used many mic preamps over the years, we’ve implemented a unique stepped gain control that should be impervious to the normal flaking that age causes to pans and flip switches. A villain!” The LED indicates when the input signal is overloading the circuit.

CompSat™

The CompSat’s unique circuit sets the Mike-E apart from all other mic preamps.

SATURATOR – a multi-stage soft-clipping circuit. At lower levels, a triode-like saturation affects the signal. As the level increases, a second unique clip circuit begins to flatten peaks more severely.

COMPRESSOR – based on the famous ELI Distressor, but with other features (including a much longer attack time). Preset ratios include: 2:1, 4:1, 8:1… and of course Nuke.

EMPHASIS – a two-stage circuit that slightly boosts and cuts high frequencies before the CompSat™ circuit, then cuts frequencies after it. Emphasis has the added benefit of enhancing the signal over the noise, which is why analog tape recorders used emphasis to begin with.

Mike-E’s Seven Circuits

Microphone preamplifier
Ultra-low noise, smooth gain switching

Direct box
Unprecedented distortion, noise and frequency response when preamping instruments.

Colored HP filter
The 80Hz High Pass Filter emulates the warm low frequency cut of our favorite vintage EQs.

Phase switch
Reverse the audio signal 180 degrees

CompSat
It offers both a musical compressor/limiter and a unique tape-like saturation circuit.

Emphasis
The high-frequency emphasis system softens high-frequency pile-ups and further enhances the creamy color of the Mike-E.

MixControl
Allows blending of the compressed/overdriven signal with the clean, unprocessed “Dry” signal.

Telefunken TF51

The Telefunken TF51 is a tube condenser microphone with a renewed echo of the “Austrian” sound associated with the legendary Telefunken ELA M 251 and C12 microphones. The Telefunken TF51 continues that same legacy, displaying smooth midrange response and big breathing in the higher end, capturing every subtle nuance in delightful detail. This microphone is a guaranteed first choice for lead vocals, acoustic instruments and percussion

circuit design

In order to achieve ultra-realistic fidelity the Telefunken TF51 microphone uses only the highest quality components. The 6072A valve (also used by the Telefunken ELA M 251E and C12) is accompanied by a capsule terminated on the rim, similar in concept to the historic CK12. The output transformer is custom made, produced in Germany by Haufe, the same company that produced them for Telefunken. Attention to detail gives the TF51 a smooth and wonderful sound profile.

Main features:

  • Wide and detailed frequency response
  • Softness and space on the highs, heritage of the ELA M 251E
  • Balanced bass and very balanced mid frequencies
  • Hand assembled in the US
  • CK12 type capsule and Haufe transformers, similar to the C12 and 251E

Applications for Telefunken TF51 Tube condenser microphone

  • Female Vocal, Pop Vocal
  • Acoustic guitar
  • Overheads
  • Violin
  • Mandolin
  • Grand piano
