Recording, Mixing and Mastering

The WesAudio ngOmniBox is available for pre-order: a stereo analog processor with digital recall that combines a passive EQ, bus compressor, saturation, clipper, and stereo imaging control into a single unit, designed for the mix bus and mastering.
WesAudio is thus expanding its ng (Next Generation) line, a series of recallable studio hardware that combines analog sound with the convenience of DAW control. The ngOmniBox is designed to become the centerpiece of your final mix setup: all the stages that are typically built by daisy-chaining multiple processors are already connected here, each with its own bypass, and with insert points to integrate the outboard gear you don’t want to do without.

For decades, sound engineers have built their own mixing and mastering chains by carefully combining different analog processors: an equalizer to shape the tone, a compressor to tie the mix together, a saturator for harmonic density, a clipper to control peaks, and finally, a stereo imaging tool. The ngOmniBox brings this entire workflow into a single, fully analog stereo processor, while still allowing you to recall any setting in an instant. The result is a consistent chain that’s quick to manage and always identical to itself when you reopen a session weeks later.

It all starts with a fully adjustable stereo input level, accompanied by precise metering. Immediately after the input trim is an electronically balanced insert point, which allows you to insert an external processor before everything else, followed by a variable high-pass filter to clean up the low end before the signal reaches the main sections.

The two-band equalizer is a fully analog passive design, intended for broad, musical adjustments rather than surgical corrections. One of the most interesting features is the ability to reverse the order between the EQ and the compressor: with a simple switch, you can toggle between EQ → COMP and COMP → EQ, allowing you to determine how the two sections interact. This is particularly useful if you’re already using another equalizer on the input insert.

The compressor is a stereo VCA designed to provide the classic “glue” effect on the mix bus, to control peaks, and to give cohesion to the overall sound. It offers fast or slow attack, three release times, and two ratios, as well as a wet/dry control for parallel compression and a high-pass filter on the sidechain—selectable at 60, 90, or 150 Hz—which prevents the kick and bass fundamentals from causing the entire mix to pump.

The saturation section is a completely new analog circuit that is independent of the EQ and compression. In addition to the intensity control, it has its own wet/dry control: you can intentionally push the saturation beyond what’s necessary and then blend it into the mix, achieving density and harmonic character without losing the integrity of the original signal.

The analog clipper is controlled via a single-knob interface and is used to control peaks and shape transients, gaining loudness without losing control of the dynamics.

For the stereo image, there is a dedicated section with a high-pass filter on the side signal: this allows you to choose which part of the spectrum to widen, while keeping the low frequencies tight and centered.

Finally, the adjustable stereo output level with its metering allows you to precisely set the final gain after all processing. Immediately before the output trim is a second insert point, which can operate in either stereo or Mid/Side mode: a valuable feature for those who want to process the center and sides separately during mastering using an external processor.
Each section and each insert has its own independent bypass, so the chain is suitable for both light processing on the mix bus and more in-depth work during the mastering phase.

Like the entire ng line, the ngOmniBox is controlled via a plugin that integrates with your DAW: every parameter is saved with the session, can be recalled at any time, and is automatable. The plugin’s interface is designed to resemble the plugins you use every day, rather than faithfully replicating the front panel, making it intuitive to use. Rounding out the package are A/B/C comparison and a built-in LCD display, which are handy for quickly comparing multiple settings on the same track.

The ngOmniBox is designed for mix and mastering engineers who work in a hybrid setup and want the analog sound on the master bus without sacrificing the speed and repeatability of in-the-box workflows. It’s the ideal solution for those who handle many revisions and need to be able to reopen a project exactly as it was, but also for those who want to build a complete finalization chain starting with a single unit and expand it over time using inserts. It also pairs naturally with the WesAudio ngSumBox summing mixer, with which it forms a fully recallable analog ecosystem.
