Pair of active ribbon microphones with stereo bar
The AEA N22 Stereo Kit is a complete solution for professional stereo recording, consisting of two NUVO N22 active ribbon microphones selected to deliver a consistent, natural, and detailed sound. The kit includes a dedicated stereo bar with all the necessary hardware to set up Blumlein configurations and other stereo techniques.
The AEA N22 microphones combine the warmth and natural sound typical of ribbon transducers with a more extended and present high-frequency response. The near-field design and reduced proximity effect allow the microphones to be placed very close to the sound sources while maintaining a balanced sound that is easy to work with in the mix.
The configuration with two N22 microphones allows you to create wide, realistic, and well-defined stereo images. Thanks to its native bidirectional polar pattern, the kit is particularly well-suited for the Blumlein technique, but can also be adapted to other stereo configurations.
The included mounting plate features laser-etched markings and comes with the necessary hardware to properly align the two microphones. This solution simplifies placement and makes the kit suitable for recording studios, concert halls, and mobile applications.
By positioning the two microphones with their capsules aligned and rotated 90° apart, you can achieve a Blumlein setup with a natural stereo image and excellent ambient reproduction. This technique is ideal for piano, drums, acoustic ensembles, strings, woodwinds, choirs, and percussion.
The figure-8 polar pattern captures sound from the front and rear of each microphone while significantly attenuating side-mounted sources. The result is an accurate representation of the instruments’ positions and the room’s acoustics.
The AEA N22 was developed specifically for close-up recording. Unlike many traditional ribbon microphones, it features a more subdued proximity effect, allowing you to place the microphone closer to the source without an excessive boost in low frequencies.
The response remains balanced even just a few centimeters from the sound source, making the kit particularly effective in small spaces, isolation booths, or rooms with less-than-optimal acoustics. Close placement also helps reduce the amount of unwanted ambient sound.
The slight boost in presence around 3 kHz enhances definition and intelligibility while maintaining the smoothness typical of ribbon microphones. This characteristic allows recorded signals to stand out in the mix without necessarily requiring the use of additional microphones.
The AEA N22 Stereo Kit is suitable for electric guitars, bass amplifiers, acoustic guitars, drums, percussion, vocals, piano, and numerous other instruments.
The N22 microphones offer a frequency response extending beyond 20 kHz, preserving the detail of transients and higher harmonics. The sound retains the classic warm, natural, and smooth character associated with AEA ribbon microphones.
The combination of high-frequency extension, present mids, and controlled low frequencies makes the set versatile for both ambient stereo recordings and close-up captures of individual sources.
Each microphone features built-in active electronics powered by P48 phantom power. The 92 Ω output impedance ensures a stable interface with microphone preamps, mixers, audio interfaces, and professional recording systems.
The active circuit reduces dependence on the preamp’s impedance and gain setting, offering a higher output level than traditional passive ribbon microphones.
With a maximum sound pressure level of 141 dB SPL, the N22 microphones can be used even on very loud sound sources. The kit is therefore suitable for recording guitar and bass amplifiers, drums, percussion, and brass instruments without compromising signal clarity.
The AEA N22 Stereo Kit comes with a high-quality SKB hard case featuring molded foam inserts. The case protects the microphones and accessories during transport and storage.
Also included are two custom NUVO windscreens manufactured by WindTech, the laser-engraved stereo plate, and all the hardware needed to configure the microphones in Blumlein mode or other stereo configurations.
