Electret condenser microphone with cardioid polar pattern and balanced transformer output
The Audio-Technica AT5047 is a cardioid condenser microphone from the 50 Series, designed for studio use and equally effective for vocals and instruments. According to Audio-Technica, it offers the widest dynamic range of any of its microphones: it captures the expressive character of a sound source in every nuance, from the gentle brush strokes on a snare drum to the most powerful vocal performances. The transformer-coupled output and the four-diaphragm capsule inherited from the AT5040 make it a benchmark for those seeking detail, stability, and a natural sound.
The AT5047 features a transformer-coupled output, which maintains a constant output impedance even when recording sources at extreme sound pressure levels. The result is a stable and predictable connection between the microphone and the preamp or mixer input, along with a smooth and pleasant tonal character, particularly appreciated for vocal recordings.
With an intrinsic noise level of just 6 dB SPL and a maximum SPL of 148 dB, the AT5047 covers a dynamic range of 142 dB. You can use it on delicate sources, such as a whispered vocal or a fingerstyle acoustic guitar, but also in front of an amplifier, on brass instruments, or on drums—without switching microphones and without worrying about clipping or hiss.
The AT5047 uses the four-part rectangular element originally developed for the AT5040. Four ultra-thin, 2-micron diaphragms, carefully matched, work together with their outputs summed via a proprietary circuit, forming the largest element ever produced by Audio-Technica: a total surface area twice that of a standard 1" circular diaphragm.
Dividing the surface area into four diaphragms allows for the benefits of a very large diaphragm—starting with extremely low self-noise—without the increased mass, slowed transient response, and other limitations that typically restrict diaphragm size. This enhances the recording of both vocals and acoustic instruments, delivering precise attack and a detailed soundstage.
Each AT5047 is hand-assembled and individually inspected for comprehensive quality control. Discrete components are selected to optimize performance and compatibility with standalone preamps and mixer inputs, while every aspect of the design is engineered to minimize any influence on the audio signal. The aluminum and brass body with a silver finish combines elegance and durability.
The internal suspension system—the same one used on the AT5040—decouples the capsule from the microphone body, reducing vibrations and mechanical noise. The included AT8480 shock mount adds an additional layer of isolation, while the hard case with molded foam compartments protects the microphone during transport and storage.
