Sequential Oberheim OB-X8

8-Voice Analog Synthesizer

Oberheim OB-X8 is an analog synthesizer with a 5 octave Fatar keyboard sensitive to velocity and aftertouch in which we find all the key features of the legendary OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8 products combined with modern construction precautions. 8-voice polyphonic and bi-timbral features 2 discrete VCOs, 2 selectable VCFs, 2 envelopes and Vintage function, 2 LFOs, Arpeggiator and Master Tune.

The return of the Oberheim sound without compromise

After 35 years, Oberheim is proud to present its first new product the OB-X8. “A new design, the largest of the instruments in the entire OB range, which retains the style and sound that made this family of synthesizers famous,” said Tom Oberheim. A modern and precise Poly-Analog.

The Sound Synthesis in the OB-X8

The OB-X8’s discrete analog oscillators are capable of delivering the classic punchy Oberheim tone. There are two per voice and they are capable of reproducing pulse, saw and triangle waveforms. Both VCOs have a dedicated potentiometer for frequency adjustment and can be synchronized to create sharp leads and rich harmonics sounds. Present a potentiometer to detunate the frequency of the second oscillator and we find it in the Control section. When the Unison function is on, the OB-X8 behaves just like a monophonic: it plays only one note at a time with the ability to detun all eight voices used simultaneously. Turn it on to create full-bodied, impressive bass and leads by allocating all 8 voices to a single note. The Chord Memory function stores the intervals between one note and another, and then transposes and reproposes them following the (fundamental) note that you will play on the keyboard. To change the pitch of both oscillators at the same time, a potentiometer called Master Tune has been dedicated, which we find positioned in the Master section.

The filters of the Oberheim OB-X8

Like any self-respecting Oberheim, also for OB-X8 the filter section is put in the foreground. This time, however, Oberheim did not stop with introducing a single filter into the synthesis path. Under the dashboard we find two distinct filters and above the dashboard instead a dedicated switch to switch from one VCF to another. The first is a discrete SEM filter capable of giving the style and presence of OB-X, with three additional high-pass, band-pass and notch modes in addition to the classic low-pass. The second VCF is handled by an authentic 2- or 4-pole configurable Curtis filter to add the OB-Xa’s classic character and sound.

OB-X8’s Vintage Mode Pot

In collaboration with Sequential’s Dave Smith, Tom Oberheim engaged in extensive research into what made the sound so unique, warm and organic in old vintage synths. Together, the two found that much of these characteristics are due to slight fluctuations and differences in voice-to-voice response times and not just in the frequencies of individual VCOs, but also in filters, envelopes and amplifiers. To achieve the same behavior in the new OB-X8, Oberheim has created the potentiometer called Vintage, through which you can gradually and randomly add the same imperfections so appreciated in vintage synthesizers. Try it and you will never be able to do without it.

Polyphonic and bi-timbral

Oberheim OB-X8 is bitimbral: it can simultaneously reproduce two sounds of 4 voices each in two different modes. In Split mode the keyboard is split in two and we will dedicate one sound to the low octaves and another one to the high octaves. In Double mode, on the other hand, OB-X8 will be able to play two sounds simultaneously for the entire length of the keyboard; also in this mode the voices available for Program become 4.

The modulations of OB-X8

No detail was left to chance in this new Oberheim design. Hence the two envelopes on the control board: one dedicated to the amplifier and the other to the filter. Both designed to give the same response as all the other models in the OB family. The Modulation section carries an LFO capable of bringing sine, square and S/H (sample & hold) waveforms to life. We can assign and program the amount of modulation to two sets of destinations in order to modulate oscillator frequencies, filter cutoff, pulse width of both oscillators, and volume. A handy and useful Arpeggiator, on the other hand, is found to the left of the keyboard in classic vintage style, ready to give us up, down, up & down patterns, or to respect the sequence of notes we play. This is available on both sides (split or double) independently.

The Oberheim levers: pitch bend and mod

To apply bending, vibrato and other modulations in real time OB-X8 provides us with the classic two levers, both of which have adjustable range (pitch bend) and amount (mod) parameters and can act on one, or both oscillators at our discretion. This section is also home to the second LFO, dedicated to performance and controllable by the Mod lever, with its 6 waveforms: triangle, square, Up Saw, Down Saw, Sample & Hold, and Noise.

Velocity and aftertouch in the Oberheim OB-X8

Like any self-respecting modern synthesizer, the ability to program Velocity and Aftertouch could not be missing. OB-X8 allows us to do this easily and immediately, thanks to the two dedicated buttons in the Control section. We can also decide whether to dedicate Velocity to filter or volume, while for Aftertouch to filter or modulation.

Programming OB-X8

A creative and easy-to-program instrument. OB-X8’s dashboard features a potentiometer for each function, and this allows immediate access to all sound shaping parameters. The Manual button allows entry to live panel mode: press it and OB-X8 will disengage from preset mode and switch to current rotary and switch settings. What you see is exactly what you hear. Included are 600 rewritable user programs, including the original set of 400 presets from OB-X, OB-SX, OB-Xa, and OB-8.

Keyboard and connections of OB-X8

OB-X8 has been equipped with a 61-key (5-octave) FATAR keyboard that is sensitive to Velocity and Aftertouch. Connections found in the back of the instrument include two separate audio outputs of which one is monophonic and the other stereo, the latter being of paramount importance when we decide to widen the stereo image among the 8 voices. There are 4 pedal inputs: one for volume control, another for sustain, one for filter cutoff, and one for arpeggiator. For MIDI interfacing we find the DIN In, Out and Thru triad and a USB type B port for direct connection to PC and Mac computers.
