ALM Busy Circuits CIZZLE is a dual digital phase-distortion VCO, inspired by the famous Casio CZ series synthesizers. It brings the distinctive features of CZ-style PD synthesis to Eurorack: overlapping and detuning between the primary and secondary oscillators with chord generation up to 8 voices, extensive morphing waveform algorithms, the unmistakable resonant waveform, and the ring modulation and end-of-chain noise modes that define the CZ sound. From the softest ambient pads to chords inspired by ’90s Detroit techno, from Reese-style basses to timbres with that faux squelchy resonance that only phase distortion can deliver.

Casio CZ-style phase distortion synthesis in Eurorack

Phase distortion shapes the timbre by distorting the phase of a sine wave, producing waveforms rich in harmonics without analog filters. The CIZZLE reimagines this approach with two oscillators that play complementary roles—controllable via the front panel or voltage—and an encoder for quick and precise tuning.

Oscillator A: 9 morphing PD algorithms

Oscillator A offers 9 phase distortion algorithms that blend seamlessly into one another, with both direct and CV control. The Shape parameter adjusts the phase distortion offset—which is also voltage-modulable—to allow the timbre to evolve continuously and organically.

Oscillator B: CZ Resonance, Ring Mod, and Noise

Oscillator B generates the unique resonant waveform characteristic of the CZ series, with direct and CV control. It can operate in Rez, Ring Mod, or Noise modes—inspired by the original CZ synthesis—selectable via the panel or via trigger. The frequency of Oscillator B can also track that of Oscillator A with an adjustable offset, ensuring consistent intervals and detuning.

Chords with up to 8 voices for pads, techno, and Reese bass

The chord mode, which is voltage-controlled and features inversion management, generates up to 8 voices from a single VCO. By sequencing the chord CV, you can create complete harmonic progressions, perfect for techno stabs, evolving pads, and drones. By utilizing the detune between the two oscillators, you can achieve thick, pulsating Reese-style basses.

Built-in VCAs and stereo outputs

Each oscillator features a dedicated VCA for output level, so you can balance or modulate them without external modules. Voices can be routed separately or mixed together, with a stereo-widening effect that makes the sound wide and immersive right out of the module.
