Dual-pentode vari-mu compressor
The Gainlab Audio Dictator is a true Vari-Mu tube compressor designed with the philosophy of classic dynamic processors of this type in mind. Its operation is based on principles traceable to historic units such as the Fairchild 670 and Gates STA-Level, while also incorporating contemporary solutions developed to offer greater control over the sound’s behavior. Its timing and saturation characteristics echo those of traditional tube compressors, while the Dictator’s architecture allows you to switch from precise dynamic control to more pronounced processing, where compression and saturation become an integral part of the sound’s character.
The Dictator uses a pair of pentodes originally manufactured to high quality standards in former Warsaw Pact countries, including Hungary, East Germany, and Poland. Gainlab Audio combines these tubes with circuits developed using modern techniques, with the goal of achieving extremely precise operation of the two channels.
Gainlab Audio refers to the Dictator’s unique, proprietary circuit design as “Mu-Follower.” This architecture allows the compressor’s two channels to operate in sync across the entire transition curve, enabling precise control of gain reduction even at more extreme settings. This precision in the parallel behavior of the channels is particularly important in stereo applications, where the Dictator can be used to process complex material while maintaining consistent dynamic response.
The Gainlab Audio Dictator was primarily designed as a compressor for mastering and mix buses. The combination of the Vari-Mu circuit, vacuum tubes, and synchronized control of the two channels allows you to shape the dynamics of a mix while preserving the characteristic sound of an analog tube processor. However, the Dictator is not designed exclusively for subtle compression. With more aggressive settings, it can produce a pulsating effect on the master bus, emphasize saturation, and noticeably alter the transients and dynamic structure of the audio material.
In addition to dynamic control, the Dictator can be used as a true sound design tool. By pushing the circuit to more extreme operating conditions, you can achieve pronounced saturation, sharp transients, and a grittier breakup character. Conversely, when used with minimal dynamic processing, the Gainlab Audio Dictator functions primarily as a tube saturator. This versatility allows it to be used both as a mastering and mix bus processor and as a creative tool for modifying the signal’s timbre and dynamic behavior.
The Gainlab Audio Dictator thus combines the characteristics of classic Vari-Mu tube compressors with an architecture designed to integrate into modern productions. The processor offers precise signal control without necessarily being transparent: compression, saturation, and transient response can become creative elements of audio processing. With a specified frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz ±1 dB, a maximum input level of +22 dBu, and a maximum output level exceeding +26 dBu, the Dictator is designed to fit into professional signal chains dedicated to mixing, mastering, and sound design.
