Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV2: Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer

The Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV2 Keyboard is a semi-modular analog synthesizer designed to offer extensive freedom in sound generation and manipulation. Thanks to its 37-key keyboard and monophonic, paraphonic, and 2-voice polyphonic modes, it can adapt to different performance and sound design approaches. Its normalized layout allows for immediate use even without patch cables, while the 84 patch jacks let you reconfigure the signal path and interact with other Eurorack-compatible instruments. The Lifeforms SV2’s architecture combines two analog oscillators, a dual mixer, two multimode filters, two VCAs, and numerous modulation sources. The result is an instrument suitable for both the immediate creation of analog timbres and more in-depth experimentation through complex patches.

Thru-Zero Oscillators for Advanced Analog Sound Generation

At the heart of the Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV2 are two Thru-Zero Triangle-Core analog oscillators with extensive control and modulation capabilities. The range of waveforms includes symmetric pulse, blade, sine, triangle, sawtooth, and random, offering a particularly broad tonal foundation.

Thru-Zero FM, phase modulation, and Hard Sync

Both oscillators offer synthesis techniques such as Thru-Zero FM, phase modulation, linear FM, and Hard Sync. The first oscillator also features a sub-oscillator selectable at -1 or -2 octaves, which is particularly useful for adding depth to basses, leads, and layered sounds. In the normalized signal path, the two oscillators, the -1-octave sub-oscillator, and the noise generator are routed to the mixer, allowing you to quickly create complex sound sources even without manual patching.

Dual Mixer and Preamplifier for External Audio Signals

The mixing system includes a high-gain preamp dedicated to line-level external audio signals. This means you can use the Lifeforms SV2 not only as a synthesizer but also as an analog processor for external sources, taking advantage of its filters, modulations, and amplification stages. Signals from the mixer and the preamp can be tapped separately, further expanding the routing possibilities offered by the semi-modular architecture.

Dual Pittsburgh Modular Multimode Filters with Character and Drive

The Lifeforms SV2’s dual signal path includes two multimodal filters capable of operating in low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass modes, as well as various combinations. Added to these options are the Character and Drive modes, designed to more significantly alter the timbral behavior.

Drive and Warped Character for Saturation and Tonal Transformation

The variable overdrive offers up to 5x gain (equivalent to 15 dB), altering not only the signal level but also harmonic saturation and resonance behavior. The Warped Character mode, on the other hand, modifies the waveform, while Warped & Rectified applies an additional transformation through a process of distortion and rectification. The result varies depending on the waveform used and allows you to explore tones that are significantly different from those produced by traditional filtering. Each filter is followed by a dedicated VCA, controllable via an envelope or other CV sources.

Analog Spring Reverb with Tilt EQ

The final stage of the audio path includes an analog spring reverb with Tilt EQ and adjustable feedback. The characteristic metallic character of the spring reverb adds depth and a distinct vintage flavor to the sound. The Tilt EQ allows you to adjust the tonal balance of the signal sent to the reverb, ranging from darker, more subdued tones to textures that are more prominent in the midrange frequencies.

CV Modulations and Eurorack Integration of the Lifeforms SV2

The modulation section includes two ADSR envelopes, two voltage-controlled LFOs, and a Sample & Hold circuit. The LFOs feature triangle, square, and ramp waveforms and cover a wide range of frequencies. In addition to these sources, the unit’s own oscillators and the MIDI interface can also be used within the modulation system. The 84 Eurorack-compatible patch jacks also allow you to connect the Lifeforms SV2 to other semi-modular synthesizers and modular systems. The chassis also provides 24 TE of space for installing Eurorack modules, allowing you to directly expand the system with modules selected to suit your needs.
