Suiko ST-50: Shigin Trainer and vintage Japanese synthesizer

The Suiko ST-50 is a rare electronic instrument made in Japan by the Suiko (Mizukosha) brand and designed to accompany the traditional Japanese art of poetic recitation called Shigin. The model available is used and comes with original bag, an accessory increasingly difficult to find on vintage instruments of this type.

Shigin consists of the melodic declamation of classical poems accompanied by traditional instruments such as koto, shakuhachi and orchestral ensembles. The Suiko ST-50 was created with precisely this purpose in mind: to provide immediate and evocative musical accompaniment through a selection of pre-programmed musical sounds and patterns.

Traditional Japanese sounds and evocative atmospheres

Unlike synthesizers designed for complex sound synthesis, the Suiko ST-50 is designed to offer evocative timbres and musical atmospheres typical of Japanese tradition. The digital sound engine integrates a range of orchestral sounds and traditional synthesized instruments that can accompany the voice during poetic recitation or be used to create evocative soundscapes.

Because of its very unique sound character, the ST-50 has also become a very interesting instrument for sound designers, experimental musicians, and soundtrack composers over the years.

Simple and straightforward interface

The control panel of the Suiko ST-50 is designed to be quick and intuitive. The controls allow easy selection of built-in sounds and musical accompaniments, making the instrument immediately usable for both studio and creative performances.

Vintage portable synthesizer with battery power

With its compact size and the ability to run on either batteries or a DC power supply, the Suiko ST-50 is an easily transportable instrument that can be used in a variety of contexts: studio, live performance, or sound design sessions.

Today it represents a fascinating example of a Japanese electronic instrument that was born out of a specific cultural tradition and has over time become a cult object among collectors and vintage synthesizer enthusiasts.
