The Moog sound: from the iconic Muse polyphonic synthesizer to semi-modular instruments such as the Mother-32, DFAM and Subharmonicon, all the way to the legendary Minimoog Model D.
Moog is the name that defined the modern synthesizer. Founded by Robert Moog in the 1960s, the company created instruments that literally changed music forever. The original Minimoog was the world's first mass-produced portable synthesizer, the Moog ladder filter remains the most copied filter topology in synthesizer history, and the unmistakable Moog sound—that rich, warm and organic low end—continues to be the benchmark against which every analog synthesizer is judged.
At the top of today's lineup are Moog's flagship polyphonic synthesizers. The Muse brings Moog polyphony to a more accessible format, featuring six voices, two oscillators per voice and the classic ladder filter. The Matriarch is a four-voice paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer—one of the most musical architectures Moog has ever designed. The Grandmother is its two-voice counterpart, featuring a built-in spring reverb and an extensive patch bay.
The desktop semi-modular range is the most popular gateway into the world of Moog. The Mother-32 is the reference semi-modular synthesizer: a monophonic instrument with an onboard sequencer, Eurorack-compatible patch points and the unmistakable Moog sound. The DFAM (Drummer From Another Mother) is the company's semi-modular analog percussion synthesizer, featuring an eight-step sequencer and two oscillators dedicated to each percussion voice. The Subharmonicon brings subharmonic synthesis—based on harmonic theories developed in the 1930s—into a unique performance instrument. The Mavis is Moog's build-it-yourself semi-modular synthesizer kit, offering the most affordable entry into authentic Moog analog sound. The Subsequent 37 is a two-voice paraphonic keyboard synthesizer for musicians looking for a fully featured analog performance instrument. The Minitaur is the company's desktop analog bass synthesizer module.
The return of the Minimoog Model D in its 2022 edition was one of the most anticipated events in the synthesizer community in recent years. The original monophonic synthesizer has been rebuilt using the same components and circuit designs as the 1970 model, while incorporating a selection of modern improvements.
