Erica Synths EDU DIY Kick Drum is a DIY module in Eurorack format designed to capture the unmistakable character of classic analog drum machines of the 1980s and 1990s, such as the iconic 808 and 909. Those kicks defined entire genres of music, but their circuits are notoriously complex. This kit was created precisely with the goal of making their design principles understandable, without sacrificing the powerful, deep sound that made them legendary.
The result is an analog kick drum with a warm, punchy and moldable tone, perfect for techno, house, electro and contemporary electronic productions. With extensive controls, you can range from short, punchy hits to longer, resonant bass drums with a distinctly old school character.
The module offers manual and CV control of pitch, as well as an adjustable pitch envelope in depth and decay time, a key element in achieving the classic initial "thump" of analog kicks. The Decay control allows you to define the length of the thump, while Tone and Distortion allow you to add presence, saturation and aggression to the sound. Accent input completes the rhythm section, making patterns more dynamic and articulate.
Developed by Erica Synths in collaboration with Moritz Klein, the mki x es.EDU series is designed to teach analog synthesizer circuit design even to those starting from scratch. This kit is not just a module to be assembled, but a training course that explains step-by-step circuit choices and their impact on the final sound.
Each kit includes an in-depth manual that can be downloaded separately. Due to the DIY nature of the product, no technical support is provided in case of problems arising from assembly.
