Erica Synths EDU DIY Wavefolder is a DIY module in Eurorack format designed to bring the character of West Coast synthesis within the mki x es.EDU system, which is more traditionally oriented to an "East Coast" approach. Wavefolding is one of the most effective ways to expand the timbral palette of an oscillator, generating new harmonics and transforming simple waveforms into complex, richly detailed sounds.
This module uses a dual BJT transistor-based wavefolder designed to be simple, didactic, and at the same time extremely musical. In practical patches, you can go from a slight increase in brightness and presence to harder, abrasive textures and metallic drones, ideal for sound design, ambient, industrial, and experimental techno.
Inserted after a VCO or audio source, the wavefolder becomes a key creative tool: it allows you to sculpt timbre without relying solely on filtering, adding harmonic complexity and dynamic behavior that reacts very well to modulations and level changes.
Developed by Erica Synths in collaboration with Moritz Klein, the mki x es.EDU series was created with the goal of teaching analog synthesizer circuit design even to those starting from scratch. Each kit is accompanied by a detailed manual (40+ pages, downloadable separately) that explains the circuit, design choices, and basic principles of sound synthesis step by step.
The kits are designed for learning and require assembly and soldering. No technical support is provided for any problems related to failed DIY builds.
